Actor Zoe Kravitz made a bombshell appearance at the London premiere of her new film The Batman. Kravitz shared the red carpet with her co-stars Robert Pattinson, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright, and Andy Serkis, but there is absolutely no doubt which of the DC Comics characters was making the biggest impression. Dressed in a form-fitting Saint Laurent gown, the scallop necklined dress showed the incredibly gorgeous actress to the best of its ability. Even more daringly, the dress had a dramatic bust cutout that made the otherwise classically-lined grown feel risque. And maybe it is just that it was a Batman-related event, but it is hard not to see the cutouts as deliberately referencing the iconic spiked Bat logo as worn by the character over the decades. In director Matt Reeves’ The Batman, Zoe Kravitz plays Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. A longtime fixture of DC Comics, the character is generally regarded as an antihero, though she has also been portrayed as a superhero and a supervillain. The character was previously played in Tim Burtons’ 1992 film Batman Returns by Michelle Pfeiffer. While the movie is still somewhat controversial in superhero films for being far more focused on the villains than the titular hero (as well as Burton’s lifelong obsession with creepy circuses), Pfeiffer’s campy, sultry take on the character is a highlight of the movie (as is her skintight latex costume). Halle Berry also took a stab at playing Selina Kyle in 2004’s Catwoman, to much less success. The movie became a legendary production debacle, with up to a dozen writers rumored to have reworked the script over years of development. Berry herself recently had some warnings to Kravitz for taking on the character, but given she personally showed up the Golden Razzies to accept her Worst Actress Award, it seems like she has a sense of humor about it.

The press cycle for The Batman focused a great deal on Zoe Kravitz’s preparations for playing Catwoman, which apparently included studying the fighting styles of big cats like lions. Her co-star Robert Pattinson, on the other hand, trained to portray Batman by imitating Willem Dafoe in The Lighthouse doing a pirate voice, so there are all kinds of acting styles out there. Kravitz also recently mentioned that she had interpreted the character of Catwoman as bisexual, which does have plenty of backup in the comic book source material. Kravitz also previously portrayed the voice of Catwoman in the popular children’s film The Lego Batman Movie, which presumed involved less giant feline beast studying, but you never know.

In addition to The Batman, Zoe Kravitz recently starred in a streaming hit film. The Steven Soderbergh-directed KIMI dropped on HBO Max recently to excellent reviews; a dark techno-thriller, Kravitz played an agoraphobic assault survivor who discovers evidence of mass murder conspiracy via a smart home device. The Batman is set to wide release in theaters on March 4.
