Aaron Carter’s untimely death shocked everyone when the 34-year-old singer was found in his Lancaster, California home on November 5. At the time no cause was given, but The Hollywood Reporter obtained an autopsy report from the Los Angeles Medical Examiner that revealed it was an accident. According to the autopsy, Carter’s tragic passing was caused by drowning and the effects of difluoroethane and alprazolam, a generic form of Xanax.

The toxicology report for Aaron Carter’s death included difluoroethane, a gas typically used to clean electronic devices in compressed cans that can cause feelings of euphoria when used as an inhalant. Alprazolam’s side effects are commonly drowsiness and sedation. The combination of these two substances led to Carter becoming incapacitated while in his bathtub, leading to him being submerged and drowning.

Aaron Carter’s death is truly tragic, as the singer was still very young and had struggled with his substance abuse issues for years. Most recently Carter attempted to combat these issues by checking into rehab in September 2022. His rehab stint was partially to help him regain custody of his young son.

Before Aaron Carter’s death, he was best known for his rapid rise to stardom as a child star, releasing multiple platinum-selling albums in acting in several projects. Carter’s 2000 album Aaron’s Party (Come Get It) was undoubtedly his most popular project, with massive hits like”Aaron’s Party (Come Get It),” “I Want Candy,” and “That’s How I Beat Shaq,” tearing up the charts in the early aughts. Carter was also the younger brother of The Backstreet Boys’ Nick Carter.

Aaron Carter’s sixth and final album, Blacklisted, was released two days after his death.

Aaron Carter also appeared in shows like Disney Channel’s Lizzie McGuire and Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, before his death. Carter also starred in the reality TV series House of Carters with his siblings. He would later appear on a season of Dancing with the Stars and on Broadway for the Dr. Suess musical Seussical.

Aaron Carter toured with both the Backstreet Boys and Britney Spears, but his final tour before his death was in 2014 when he went on his global Wonderful World Tour. The tour included 50 dates and was preceded by his Canadian tour in 2014, where he performed in 11 different cities. Carter’s final film role was also in 2014 with College Fright Night, which also starred Brad Leo Lyon, Brooke Hogan, Dustin Diamond, Todd Bridges, Jake Roberts, Martin Klebba, Lee Arenberg, and Sara Fletcher.

Carter is survived by his mother, siblings, and son.
