Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 Ending Long-Running Fan-Favorite Series?

By Jason Collins | Published

If there’s one thing we can all agree upon, it’s that Grey’s Anatomy, as a legacy medical drama, has been on air for longer than most of us can actually remember. Well, the Season 20 premiere is just around the corner, and fans are now wondering about the possibility of the series ending any time soon, considering that it has now taken its rightful place among the list of longest-running shows, like Doctor Who, The Simpsons, and Law & Order. Fortunately, the new showrunner Meg Marinis recently revealed that there’s no ending in sight. At least not yet.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 20

When responding to a question about Season 20 being the end for Grey’s Anatomy, Meg Marinis responded with, “I’ve not been informed that this is the last season, so I’m going to keep going and telling stories as long as they let me.” And, to be entirely honest, there’s no reason for ABC to end the show, considering that Grey’s Anatomy still holds strong among Thursday night audiences while also maintaining a rather strong appeal on streaming platforms. In fact, Grey’s Anatomy is also one of the most-watched series on streaming.

Only Three Originals Are Left

Furthermore, the creative team behind Grey’s Anatomy doesn’t really shy away from introducing new characters to the overall story of the series, which contributes to the series always feeling fresh and novel despite being on air for nearly a quarter of a century. Even the cast has undergone major changes throughout the series’ run, with only three original cast members remaining at the end of Season 19 of Grey’s Anatomy, from the original nine stars billed for the series.

Arizona Is Back

Meg Marinis’ impressions regarding the potential ending of Grey’s Anatomy, or lack thereof, is also confirmed by Craig Erwich, the President of Disney Television Group, who stated that the show is as creatively strong as it’s ever been. This is particularly true considering that the series has a vast number of ex-cast members, many of whom could potentially pop back up. We’ve seen this happen before, and one such case was also announced for the upcoming Season 20, with Jessica Capshaw reprising her role as Arizona Robbins as a guest star.

No Ellen Pompeo

Season 20 of Grey’s Anatomy will also be the first not to feature Meredith Grey, portrayed by Ellen Pompeo, as a series regular. Pompeo already had a rather scaled-back role in Season 19, appearing only in eight episodes of the season. However, she will remain an executive producer and continue her signature voiceovers of the long-running show, with possible appearances in future releases associated with the show, along with many other cast members from earlier seasons—all of which are expected to make a return for Season 20.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 20 is scheduled to launch on March 14, 2024, as an abridged season of 10 episodes after its production has been delayed by the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes in the United States. Its narrative will continue to build upon the cliffhangers at the end of Season 19.
