Humor, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. We all have our certain tastes when it comes to humor – slapstick, parody, screwball, gross-out, romantic, mockumentary, and even black comedy – but sometimes it can be broken down as simple as guy humor versus gal humor. For that reason, we have put together a list of the 10 Funniest Movies That Will Make You Laugh Until You Cry, and we feel the list represents a good mixture of both guy and gal humor.

10 FUNNIEST MOVIES THAT WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH UNTIL YOU CRY

Monty Python and the Holy Grail (1975)

Funniest Movies

THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE REVIEW SCORE

The “Holy Grail” of Monty Python films. It has been almost 50 years since the premiere of the sidesplittingly funny Monty Python and the Holy Grail, a film that parodied the legend of King Arthur and his quest for the holy grail.

Nothing was off limits in the film that was written by the Monty Python troupe of Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Eric Idle, Terry Gilliam, Terry Jones, and Michael Palin.

The humor was definitely British, but it tickled the funny bone of many. Unlike their first movie, And Now for Something Completely Different, which was more a compilation of Monty Python sketches, this story was an original that played with the Arthurian legend. 50 years later and it still brings many laughs.

Airplane! (1980)

funniest movies

Make no mistake about it, Airplane! should be at the top of ANYONE’S 10 funniest movies list when it comes to films that will make you laugh until you cry. The film, put together by the wonderful trio of brothers David and Jerry Zucker along with close pal Jim Abrahams, is often considered the best in parody films and always in the top five of funniest movies ever.

The jokes are rapid-fire ranging from sight gags to silly dialogue and while some may fall flat, there are plenty more that hit the bullseye. The film stars Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty (who do a great Saturday Night Fever dance routine in the film) as well as a number of dramatic actors, who play against type.

Those include Robert Stack, Lloyd Bridges, Peter Graves, and in a role as Dr. Rumack that he turned into a late-career comedy boon, Leslie Nielsen. You may better know him as Sergeant/Detective/Lieutenant Frank Drebin of The Naked Gun fame. How could we not include The Naked Gun on this list?

Airplane! is parody at its best. It also gave way to a few more hilarious parody films created by Zucker/Zucker and Abrahams that included The Kentucky Fried Movie, Top Secret!, and of course The Naked Gun trilogy.

This Is Spinal Tap (1984)

funniest movies

Rob Reiner (A Few Good Men) made his directorial debut with this mockumentary film about “one of England’s loudest bands,” Spinal Tap. It was a critical success out of the gate but took a little bit of time to find its audience. When it did find its audience, fans understood why it’s considered to be one of the 10 funniest movies that will make you laugh until you cry.

The film stars Michael McKean, Christopher Guest, and Harry Shearer as Spinal Tap band members with Rob Reiner as a documentary filmmaker following around the band as they embark on their U.S. tour. The band is touring the United States as they promote their new album, Smell the Glove. The mockumentary takes a funny look at rock bands and their pretensions and behaviors and has the distinction of being known as the film that pretty much started the mockumentary genre.

Over the years, Guest has capitalized on the genre by churning out other mockumentary comedies such as Waiting for Guffman, Best in Show, A Mighty Wind, and For Your Consideration. With all of these films, Guest has used many of the same comedic actors.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Funniest Movies

What happens when you mix comedy with flesh-eating zombies? You get Shaun of the Dead, a hilarious horror romp from the minds of Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright. The film, which stars Pegg as Shaun, a London electronics salesman who has no life direction, also stars Nick Frost as Ed, his flatmate who finds themselves caught up in a zombie apocalypse.

Shaun of the Dead is filled with great comedy as it tackles the seriousness of surviving a zombie apocalypse.

If belly laughs are what you like in your movie-going experiences, then the above movies will surely fit the bill. None of them are meant to be taken seriously, and even if they were, you probably couldn’t. Give each and everyone a try, you won’t be disappointed.

Superbad (2007)

funniest movies

THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE REVIEW SCORE

The premise of the film may sound familiar, but the results are very different. Superbad tells the story of Seth and Evan (Jonah Hill and Michael Cera), two seniors in high school who are about to graduate and want to party and lose their virginity (American Pie, anyone?). The film, written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (the same name as the characters), is based on the writers’ experience as seniors themselves and why we consider it to be one of the 10 funniest movies to make you laugh until you cry.

While Hill and Cera carry the movie, the gem is Christopher Mintz-Plasse as Fogell, who becomes better known as McLovin. The hijinks are high, and the humor and language give the film a well-deserved R-rating.

Borat (2006)

Funniest Movies

THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE REVIEW SCORE

The film’s actual title is Borat! Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan and is another hilarious mockumentary that stars Sacha Baron Cohen as the title character. The film and its often cringe-inducing humor, follows Borat a Kazakhstani journalist, on his adventure to the United States while he attempts to film a documentary about his interactions with Americans.

Baron Cohen chose to film the movie unscripted, talking to Americans who believe him to be a true foreigner with little to no understanding of American customs. What resulted is some of the funniest bits to be seen on the movie screen.

Much controversy surrounded Baron Cohen’s Borat character as it has been reported that one news producer lost her job because of “Borat,” a rodeo producer was under fire for allowing “Borat” to sing the National Anthem, and feminists from the Veteran Feminists of America were not pleased with how they were seen in the film.

Bridesmaids (2011)

funniest movies

When Lillian (Maya Rudolph) asks her best friend Annie (Kristen Wiig) to be the maid of honor at her wedding, it becomes a little more than Annie can handle. Her life is in turmoil, though she does give it her best effort. The film, co-written by Wiig, also stars as bridesmaids Rose Byrne, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Ellie Kemper, and in a hilariously underrated role, Melissa McCarthy.

As one of the 10 funniest movies that will make you laugh until you cry, the humor in Bridesmaids can be funny and gross-out at the same time. The situations Annie gets herself into are classic and the jealousy between her and Rose Byrne’s Helen is fun to watch as they constantly try to one-up each other. If you haven’t seen it, trust us, you will be laughing until you cry.

The Hangover (2009)

funniest movies

Has it really been 14 years since we were introduced to the “one-man wolfpack” of Bradley Cooper, Ed Helms, Justin Bartha, and Zach Galifianakis in The Hangover? No one knew what they were in for when they sat down in their theater seats to tune into the Todd Phillips comedy, a film that is one of the 100 funniest movies that will make you laugh until you cry, but they quickly learned they were in for a lude, crude, and hilarious ride.

The Hangover stars the four mentioned actors who head to Vegas for Doug’s (Bartha) bachelor party. He is getting married in a couple of days and the friends want to have a blowout to celebrate. Both Phil (Cooper) and Stu (Helms) are beyond reluctant to bring Alan (Galifianakis) along, but Doug finally convinces them that it would be fine.

The group wakes up the next morning to discover that Doug is nowhere to be found, their suite is a ruined mess, Stu is missing a tooth, there is a tiger in the bathroom, and a baby in the closet. Things are not fine. Ken Jeong co-stars in his classic role as Chow with Heather Graham as Jade, the loveable prostitute.

Dumb and Dumber (1994)

Funniest Movies

THE SUPER MARIO BROS MOVIE REVIEW SCORE

From the very start, when Jim Carrey as Lloyd Christmas says, “G’day, Mate. Let’s put another shrimp on the barbie,” you know exactly what you are in for with Dumb and Dumber. While you may feel you get “dumb and dumber” as the film progresses, you do so with numerous chuckles and LOLs.

Carrey is in rare form as Lloyd and Jeff Daniels holds his own as the equally dimwitted Harry Dunne as a formidable mentally stunted duo who find themselves both out of jobs. Their adventure begins when Lloyd decides to return a suitcase to Mary Swanson (Lauren Holly, who just so happens to be heading across the country to Aspen, Colorado.

The comedy is ramped up when the boys decide to leave the confines of the Providence, Rhode Island apartment to track her down.

Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

funniest movies

Ron Burgundy is one of the funniest characters Will Ferrell has ever created, and there have been many. Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is set in the ’70s and stars Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell, and David Koechner as the news team from Channel 4 in San Diego. They are a very misogynistic foursome, feeling there is no place for women in the newsroom.

Ron Burgundy changes his mind when Veronica Corningstone enters the picture with her desire to become a top news anchor. The humor can be racy and very much male-dominated and while over-the-top at times, it very much goes with the ’70s era. You will surely smile at this one.
