With the new James Gunn reboot of the DC Universe, many fans are imagining possible recasting options for characters like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Aquaman. With Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom set to premiere in December, it could be the last time we see this version of the character appear onscreen. A recent Instagram post imagines Alexander Skarsgard replacing Jason Momoa as DC’s new Aquaman.

The image comes from Instagram user @youssef_defenshi, whose page consists of DC fan art, including a Joseph Gordon-Levitt Nightwing concept, a Nicolas Cage Superman concept, and a Jaimie Alexander Wonder Woman concept. This version with Alexander Skarsgård’s is similar to the style of Jason Momoa’s Aquaman, keeping the character’s more rugged quality.

The concept art sees Alexander Skarsgård’s Aquaman rocking a mid-length beard and chest and sleeve tattoos, much like Jason Momoa’s depiction of the character. It also swaps out Alexander Skarsgård’s dirty blonde hair for a darker brown. The design is decked out in a gnarly spiked bit of armor on his shoulder with similarly spiky headgear and a lethal-looking trident.

The depiction strays from the traditional depiction of Aquaman, one that could also fit Alexander Skarsgard well. Skarsgard’s dirty blonde hair could be lightened to look like the bright blonde that Aquaman is usually seen sporting. As seen in films like The Northman and The Legend of Tarzan, the actor can pack on the muscles and reach Jason Momoa-like levels of ripped.

Aquaman has seen a number of character redesigns over the past 80 years. First appearing in 1941, early costumes for the character featured an orange and green skin-tight costume, which might be his most iconic outfit. The 1990s saw Aquaman getting a massive redesign, at one point sporting long blonde hair, a gruff beard, and even a hook for a hand.

Fans who would like to see Alexander Skarsgard in the next Aquaman movie will have to wait. Jason Momoa is already set to reprise his role in Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom scheduled to be released on December 25, 2023. The film is a sequel to the 2018 film Aquaman and sees Aquaman teaming up with an unlikely ally to protect the world from an ancient power.

Alexander Skarsgård does not feature at all in the movie. Instead, Jason Momoa is joined by Amber Heard, who is returning as Mera, and some big names like Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Nicole Kidman, and Randall Park. Fans are disappointed that Ben Affleck’s Batman won’t be making any surprise appearances in the film after his filmed cameo was reportedly cut.

As the DCU moves forward, it is possible that an actor like Alexander Skarsgard could take on the new mantle of Aquaman, despite the fan’s favorable view of Jason Momoa. Jason Momoa’s Aquaman was one of the more successful Snyderverse films, and Aquaman is one of DC’s most recognizable and longest-running heroes. Still, it remains to be seen whether Momoa will be recast in the role, whether the character will have a hard reset, or whether he will even be included in the DCU moving forward.
