In an exclusive interview with CBR, Chris Pratt and Charlie Day revealed that the upcoming Super Mario Bros includes a post-credit scene regarding the sequel. This isn’t out of the ordinary since every movie following Iron Man has done the same thing, but how it’s being discussed makes it seem like more work than usual has already been done on the sequel. What should excite fans is that the two stars name-drop a fan-favorite game as inspiration for the sequel: Luigi’s Mansion.

Released in 2001 as a launch title for the Gamecube, Luigi’s Mansion finally shone the spotlight on everyone’s second-favorite plumber. Armed with the Poltergust-3000 vacuum cleaner, Luigi has to capture ghosts, find keys, do battle with bosses, and solve puzzles. Though it’s dramatically different from the standard platformer formula, Luigi’s Mansion was a hit, with a recent threequel for the Switch becoming one of the best-selling games of 2019.

Granted, Pratt and Day also joked that the Super Mario Bros sequel would instead be about another hit game in the franchise, Mario Golf. This was a joke suggestion, with Pratt exclaiming they do research at Augusta, whereas Luigi’s Mansion has a ring of truth to it. If it was still popular to run animated shorts before feature films, then marketing the movie with five-minute cartoons of the cast engaged in golf, tennis, soccer, or kart racing would have been amazing.

As it stands, Super Mario Bros won’t need much more help to be a blockbuster for Illumination and Nintendo. A few weeks ago, the upcoming film was projected to earn $90 million, beating out Sonic the Hedgehog in an accurate re-enactment of 1990s living rooms. Other Illumination movies, including Despicable Me and The Secret Life of Pets, didn’t include sequel teases, which points to the studio’s confidence behind their collaboration with Nintendo.

The first Super Mario Bros movie starring Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo also ended with a sequel tease, but the film’s complete failure at the box office ensured that would never happen. It was one of the biggest bombs in Hollywood history, which is why we have had to wait 30 years for another Mario movie. This time, with a voice cast including Anya-Taylor Joy, Jack Black, Seth Rogen, and Keegan-Michael Key, history will not repeat itself.

If Super Mario Bros is a success and leads to a Luigi’s Mansion sequel, that will be amazing, but it will be even better if Nintendo pushes forward with the Legend of Zelda, Metroid, and given Donkey Kong’s involvement in the Mushroom Kingdom, maybe a trip to Kongo-Bongo Island? Donkey Kong and his extended family, from Diddy Kong to Lanky Kong, would also be a viable concept for a spin-off. Bonus points for Nintendo if they bring back the catchy theme song from the USA Network cartoon.

Regardless of what comes next, fans around the world are going to flock to theaters starting on April 5 to see the best version of Mario Mario and Luigi Mario brought to the big screen for the first time.
