James Cameron Used Science To Confirm The Most Tragic Titanic Death
James Cameron says he has run experiments and Jack would have died in Titanic even if he got out of the water.
James Cameron released Titanic approximately 25 years ago, and fans have debated a pivotal scene near the end of the film involving characters Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) ever since. Viewers have long speculated that the former could have survived had he joined his lover on the floating door which kept her from freezing to death in the ice-cold water. According to Variety, the director recently spoke with The Toronto Sun while promoting Avatar: The Way of Water, where he revealed that he used a forensic study to confirm that the door that saved Rose’s life would not have supported two people.
Since the film’s initial release in 1997, James Cameron has heard the grumblings from fans regarding the seemingly needless death of Jack. They have long argued that there was no need for him to remain in the water as the Titanic sunk to the ocean floor. Had Rose scooched over just a bit, Jack could have avoided succumbing to hypothermia, according to this theory.
Of course, James Cameron is never one to shy away when it comes to voicing his opinion. In the past, he’s called the ongoing debate over Jack’s fate in Titanic stupid. Now, he has confirmed that he conducted a “scientific study” in hopes of finally putting an end to the decades-long argument.
James Cameron revealed that he and a team partnered with a hypothermia expert to do a “thorough forensic analysis” where the raft from Titanic was recreated to determine if two people could have survived. Additionally, the director shared that several other tests were conducted with two stunt people with the same body mass as Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet. After exploring whether both characters could have survived through a series of methods, the filmmaker was able to determine that just “one could survive.”
James Cameron also shared that a special centered around the study will arrive in February, which coincides with yet another rerelease of Titanic. The blockbuster film is scheduled to return to theaters on Valentine’s Day weekend 2023 in stunning 4K. It’s set to directly compete with another romance flick, Magic Mike’s Last Dance, which stars Channing Tatum and Salma Hayek.
Thanks to the recent release of Avatar: The Way of Water, James Cameron has been in the news quite a bit as of late. In addition to promoting the long-awaited sequel, he’s also discussed some of his previous projects like The Terminator and Titanic. In fact, the filmmaker completely shocked fans when he shared that Leonardo DiCaprio almost lost out on the role of Jack due to the actor’s unwillingness to audition for the part.
The director told GQ that he and the actor butted heads during the film’s audition process. He revealed that Leonardo had a poor attitude when it came to auditioning for the role of Jack, with the actor refusing to read lines for James Cameron. Fortunately, after the filmmaker threatened to seek a different actor for the part, DiCaprio eventually met the director’s demands and was able to secure a role in Titanic.
Currently, James Cameron is hoping to make box office history once again with Avatar: The Way of Water. The fantasy flick will play for two months in theaters before it competes with the release of Titanic in February. The sequel stars Sam Worthington, Sigourney Weaver, Zoey Saldana, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, and Vin Diesel.
