The long-awaited sequel to 2018’s God of War soft-reboot game is apparently coming later this year, after a series of very justified delays, which were fantastically managed by the PlayStation’s first-party studio and game’s developer Santa Monica Studio. The announcement about the game’s release date was also followed by a short new CG trailer featuring Kratos and Atreus fighting multiple threats, setting the tone for their upcoming adventure.

According to IGN, the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game are scheduled for November 9 release date, following numerous delays and rumors about the game being pushed into 2023. Besides releasing the trailer above to accompany the announcement, Sony and Santa Monica Studio also revealed several editions of the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok game, which range from the standard edition, launch edition, Jotnar Edition, and the ultra-deluxe version of the game which also includes a 16-inch replica of Thor’s hammer Mjolnir.

Sony also announced that pre-orders for the God of War: Ragnarok game will open on July 15, before the game’s official arrival on November 9. It’s still unknown whether Sony plans to release the game for PC, just like it did with its predecessor, but following the original game’s massive success on the platform, they’re, at the very least, considering the idea. For now, the game is scheduled for a PS4 release, with Sony giving the old gal a proper goodbye and PS5 gaming platforms — but we could be looking into a timed exclusive.

If the giants of the tech industry have their way, with Sony pushing God of War to PC and Microsoft investing heavily into their cloud gaming services, it would be entirely possible to play the upcoming God of War: Ragnarok game on Xbox consoles if the game ever arrives to PC. Imagine explaining that to 2010-era gamers; you’d be accused of witchcraft and burned at the stake. Regardless, it would be fun seeing Kratos swinging his ax on Sony’s main competitor’s console.

Set three years after the events of the original game, God of War: Ragnarok will follow Kratos and now-teenager Atreus (Loki) as they take on Norse gods like Thor and Freya during their search for Tyr, the Norse god of war. Add raising a teenager to a search for his Norse counterpart to the list, and it’s quite evident why God of War: Ragnarok is said to be the finale of the franchise’s Norse saga. In retrospect, the new games really showed Kratos’ character development from a rage-fueled butcher of the Greek pantheon to a ruthless warrior deity and a father figure.

God of War: Ragnarok was originally slated for 2021, but the studio announced the game was delayed. Initially, the public believed that the game was being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, which certainly had a degree of influence on the delay. We later found out that the main cause of the delay was Christopher Judge‘s spinal and hip surgery. The Kratos voice actor publicly spoke of this and praised Santa Monica Studio for the unconditional love and support he received, despite being the main cause of the delay.
