John Cena is bringing his The Suicide Squad character Peacemaker to HBO Max in January with a brand new series. Written and overseen by The Suicide Squad director James Gunn, the series promises to bring the same kind of irreverent and twisted humor that the excellent feature film delivered in spades. We have gotten plenty of glimpses at the upcoming show, and it looks like HBO Max has put out another sneak peek that gives us a good idea of what we can expect when the show finally lands.

Check out John Cena in this new clip from Peacemaker:

There are plenty of other returning actors from The Suicide Squad besides John Cena who want to get in on the Peacemaker shenanigans as well as new cast members. From everything we have seen, it looks like Warner Bros./DC continued to give James Gunn the kind of creative freedom we rarely see from modern superhero cinema. The over-the-top violence, vulgarity, and actual deeper messaging peek through in this short clip. No doubt that Gunn is packing another wallop with this show, and it is going to be intriguing to see if the series takes off with fans.

The biggest hurdle to cross is going to be turning Peacemaker into the kind of lead character that we can actually learn to love. John Cena does a lot of the heavy lifting in that regard. For as vile and morally bankrupt as the character has proven to be, Cena’s portrayal adds incredible layers of unplumbed depth to this murderous vigilante. His performance in The Suicide Squad is one of the highlights of the year and it’s a shame it’s not being heralded as such. Hopefully, his turn in the HBO Max series will get more folks to realize just how special his talents are in connection to this role.

And there’s plenty more to be excited about with Peacemaker. John Cena will be sharing the screen with legendary genre actor Robert Patrick, best known for playing the terrifying T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgment Day. We were given hints of Peacemaker’s relationship with his father in The Suicide Squad, but the series promises to completely explore their tense relationship. More than whatever action elements are planned for the show, it is this dynamic and character history that promises to yield the most fertile bits of storytelling. Fingers crossed it will have been worth the wait.

Peacemaker will be hitting HBO Max on January 13. Although The Suicide Squad failed to light up the box office, one can hope that this show will shine some more light on one of the best superhero movies in decades. And John Cena has proven to be a star in his own unique right thanks to this particular role. If all goes well, we hope that this won’t be the only season of Peacemaker we get. We are looking forward to even more adventures with one of the most wonderfully warped comic book vigilantes to ever be adapted for the screen.
