Jurassic Park Lego Set Is Stomping This Way

How many times have you had a glass of water and slammed your hand against the table to trick yourself into thinking that a Tyrannosaurus is outside your house? Now you’ll have small toy versions of the characters (hopefully including Tim and Lex Murphy) to look all worried, as Universal Partnerships & Licensing have teamed with Lego Group to put out a Jurassic Park Lego set to coincide with the release of Universal’s Jurassic World. Also, diluting pain medication in the water glass helps that fantasy along.
According to the press release (via Brickset), we can look forward to building the world of Jurassic Park in May 2015, roughly a month before Colin Trevorrow’s long-awaited sequel hits theaters. Lego gave no sign as to exactly how big of a set this will be, or what characters, locations, or props it includes, but UP&L Vice President of Global Licensing and Entertainment Jill Wilfert says, “The film’s imagery and branding are iconic, with a rich array of landscapes, vehicles and dinosaurs that are perfect for inspiring a line of building sets that will encourage hours of creative play.”
The use of the phrase “rich array” makes me hopeful that this will be a fairly expansive set, not just the Jeep, the T-Rex, and a bunch of plants. Granted, I wouldn’t look a gift dinosaur in the mouth if that’s all they came out with, but it sounds like they’re putting a lot of effort into this. It seems unlikely that they’ll show off Jurassic World-themed locations and dinosaurs before the film comes out, but it’s possible the trailers will introduce audiences to these elements ahead of time anyway. We all know Jurassic World is going to blow up summer cinema next year, and Universal is going to push the hell out of it across every platform imaginable.
Beyond the Lego set(s), they’ve announced a slew of other licensing deals, so we can expect to see Jurassic World underwear, umbrellas, birthday cakes, R/C toy vehicles, costumes, puzzles, dinnerware, and stationary. You will not be able to escape the marketing onslaught.
Last year, we’d talked about a Lego Cuusoo (now Lego Ideas) project for Jurassic Park blocks, but nothing ever came of that. It probably showed Lego that a bunch of people would be interested in such a set though. After all, that’s how the Ghostbusters Lego set came into being.
So warm up your building cap (or whatever clothes choice you prefer) and get ready for Lego Jurassic Park! Shouldn’t Jeff Goldblum have had his own Lego set by now anyway?
