At the rate we’re going, we’ll see a substantial chunk of the debut episode of Syfy’s 12 Monkeys well before the premiere this Friday. Actually, between the release of the first nine minutes, followed by another three, we’ve already laid eyes on roughly a quarter of the pilot, but that’s not enough, that’s never enough, and the network released another piece for our perusal.
Just when you think Syfy is done expanding their development slate, those crazy kids go ahead and add something else to their ever-growing list of future shows. Today they announced their latest endeavor, the futuristic prison drama 51st State, and it sounds like something we can totally get into.
The one-hour drama is set in the nearish future when the prison population in the United States has grown so vast, so out of control, that there is nowhere left incarcerate criminals. And here is the best solution you’ve ever heard, the government buys Greenland—yes, they buy Greenland, because that’s something you can do in the future, purchase a whole other country—and convert the island nation into frontier style prison colony, one where both male and female convicts are mixed together.
Last week, we got a glimpse at the first nine minutes of Syfy’s upcoming adaptation of 12 Monkeys. It was a solid look that gives you an idea of the world, tone, and aesthetic they’ve created. But if that wasn’t enough, the network is back with another extended clip, though this one only clocks in at a little more than three-minutes long.
I’m not 100% sure, but I’m reasonably certain that this is the scene that immediately follows the first video. Also, you probably noticed that this is “part 2 of 5,” which indicates that we will likely see three more of these videos between now and this Friday, January 16, when 12 Monkeys premieres. So we have that to look forward to.
Syfy’s 12 Monkeys, their adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s 1995 time travel thriller of the same name, is set to debut in less than two weeks, and the network has been pushing their latest endeavor hard in the days leading up to the premiere. And that includes this latest offering, which is the first nine minutes of the pilot conveniently packaged for your consumption. Check it out below.
Ronald D. Moore’s plague thriller Helix is now just about two weeks away from kicking off its second season on Syfy. This time they’re changing out the ice-bound environs of the Arctic Circle for a remote forest island, though as you can clearly see in this new trailer, the heroes’ situation is no less perilous and full of danger. Hell, this time around it might even be creepier.
Despite the change in venue, shifting to the Lost looking island, the set up appears to be rather similar. They’re in a remote, isolated location where a viral outbreak is running rampant. And, of course, there’s more going on than the team from the CDC initially sees. Just in case you didn’t notice that, one character’s voice over tells you that this island is not what it appears to be. It will be interesting to see how this new set up connects to the last, and how the events at Arctic Biosystems from season one will inform things now that we’re getting a wider view of this particular world.
It’s been 18 years since Terry Gilliam’s 12 Monkeys first entered our lives and warped our brains with its plague of madness. The film’s storyline is getting almost completely uprooted for the upcoming Syfy series, and many of us have been wondering just how close the two projects will be. As it turns out, not very close at all.
12 Monkeys showrunner Natalie Chaidez recently spoke with EW and ran the gamut of comparative properties between the film and TV show. Beyond the actors, writers, and directors, there are quite a few more changes coming our way.
