Billy Dee Williams May Be Back For More Star Wars, Here’s How

fb share tweet share

lando calrissianThough he recently reprised his iconic Lando Calirssian role on Star Wars Rebels, we won’t be seeing Billy Dee Williams in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. He has said that he “has a feeling” he’ll be back on the big screen before long, and it’s looking more and more like Lando’s trademark smile and swagger will indeed make an appearance.

The British tabloid The Sun, so, right there you’ll want to take this report with a grain of salt, claims that Williams has been told that he’ll have “a fun cameo” cameo in Star Wars: Episode VIII, and their source said the 77-year-old actor is “definitely up for it.”

This Star Wars Veteran Thinks He’ll Be Back On The Big Screen Eventually

lando calrissianAs the Star Wars universe expands exponentially, we’re going to get to meet all kinds of new characters and go on all sorts of fun new adventures. And of course we’re going to get to hang out with some familiar faces as well, most notably Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia, and Han Solo. That’s pretty awesome. When we found out that some characters were going to show up again, it kicked off an avalanche of speculation about who might return, and when we found out who, people were bummed that maybe their favorite was left out. With so many more movies on the way, there are ample opportunities for others to reprise their roles, and one former player thinks that he will be back for another movie eventually.

One notable absence in Star Wars: The Force Awakens is Billy Dee Williams’ Lando Calrissian. That’s a bummer, as lots of us would love to see what he’s been up to since he blew up the Death Star in Return of the Jedi. Lando did show up recently on the animated series Star Wars Rebels, with Williams providing the voice, and though he won’t be on the big screen come December 18, he expects that it is only a matter of time before he rejoins that far, far away galaxy.

Watch Billy Dee Williams And Lando Calrissian Return To Star Wars

If you’re a Star Wars character from the original trilogy, and you’re not making an appearance in The Force Awakens next December, don’t worry, Star Wars Rebels has your back. They’ve already brought in beloved characters like Obi-Wan Kenobi, Master Yoda, and even Darth Vader, and now they’re bringing back another fan favorite, Lando Calrissian, as voiced Bill Dee Williams himself. This new video hypes up his return, with Williams running lines, bringing his trademark smoothness to the voice role, and the cast and crew talking about how the character fits into the Rebels world.

We heard Lando was coming back, and even saw an image of how his character looks, but here you get actual footage. While I’m still not crazy about the animation style, they certainly capture the essence of the character. Lando has more swagger than anyone in the Star Wars universe, including Han, and that comes across here. And Williams may be 77-years-old, but he’s just as smooth as ever, bringing his charm and flair to the role one more time.

Billy Dee Williams And Lando Calrissian Return To Star Wars, Here’s How

lando calrissianWe know that most of the key players from the original Star Wars trilogy are all coming back in J.J. Abrams’ upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Han, Leia, Luke, Chewbacca, R2-D2, and C-3P0 all show up later this year when the first film in the post-Disney era of Lucasfilm drops on December 18. For all of the other characters we want to see, however, it looks like we’ll have to keep tuning into the animated Star Wars Rebels on Disney XD. And they added yet another classic cameo to the mix, Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian.

According to the website Big Shiny Robot (we can certainly get behind that name), Williams and his smooth-talking, mustachioed space rogue show up on the next episode, entitled “Idiot’s Array.” The story revolves around Zeb, the big, tough, weird looking muscle of titular group of rebels, who gets into a game of Sabacc with a well known space gambler (guess who), and loses their astromech droid Chopper. Never get into such a contest with a dude who looks as overly confident as Lando, that’s just rule number one. From there, they crew of The Ghost gets into some hot water with a group of gangsters (Hutts maybe?) and adventures ensue. Here’s a screenshot of what a youthful Lando looks like.

Billy Dee Williams Cha-Chas Alongside R2-D2 On Dancing With The Stars

This is the third time we’ve had the (dis)pleasure of talking about ABC’s reality competition Dancing With the Stars here on GFR, following Bill Nye’s short-lived run on the series. I can’t tell if I’m bothered by this, due to my lack of interest in the show or if I’m satisfied with more science and sci-fi personalities making their way into reality television. (It’s probably the former.) In any case, the show’s 18th season started with a bang — or at least a pyoo-pyoo sound — when 76-year-old Billy Dee Williams strutted out on stage and Lando-bombed the crowd with a Star Wars-themed version of the cha-cha. To say it was magnificent would be a major understatement.
