AbnettLanningYou Might Want To Read The Abnett/Lanning Comics
We mentioned above that Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning’s run on the Guardians of the Galaxy series, which spun off of Marvel’s epic Annihilation event, was an influence on the film. That comic series introduced the current Guardians line-up — Star-Lord, Drax the Destroyer, Gamora, Rocket Raccoon, and Groot — along with a few others — Adam Warlock, Phyla-Vell, and Mantis. When asked if any of those other characters might appear in the movie, Gunn said, “Maybe sorta.”

In fact, one of those characters has already been teased. Adam Warlock occasionally uses a cocoon or shell to regenerate, and a prop bearing a strong resemblance to the cocoon appeared in the Collector’s museum during the end-credits sequence in Thor: The Dark World. Could be setting something up for Guardians, or it could just be an Easter egg. Either way, they’ve got their bases covered if they want to introduce the character down the line. And if you want to bone up on the group, you can purchase digital copies of Abnett and Lanning’s Guardians comics on Comixology.

The Future? (Possible Spoilers for Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.)
Gunn said he’s contractually obligated to return for a sequel if Guardians of the Galaxy is successful enough to warrant one. While Marvel has mostly downplayed talk of more Guardians at some point, Thanos is definitely being set up as a major player in the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and it would make sense that the Guardians would be involved. But even if they aren’t, I hope we’ll get to see more of their adventures in the future.

One last intriguing bit: earlier this year, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV series revealed that Agent Coulson’s miraculous resurrection was achieved, at least in part, with biological material harvested from the body of an alien Kree. Guardians’ main villain, Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), is a Kree. Many have speculated that more significant developments would come from that, and I’m personally wondering if the Kree angle has anything to do with the mysterious symbols Coulson was scratching into the wall at the end of the recent season finale. When asked if Guardians would have any direct connections to Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s dead Kree, Gunn said simply, “Maybe.”

Guardians of the Galaxy opens in theaters on August 1, 2014.
