If you’ve been paying attention, ABC’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. has, after seven months and 18 episodes, finally gotten interesting. It took a crossover with Captain America: The Winter Soldier to do the trick—they tried bring the Thor movies into the fold a couple of times without much success— not just connecting to the larger drama going on in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but actually playing a part in the action. During last night’s episode, “Providence,” they debuted a new behind the scenes look at their upcoming space adventure Guardians of the Galaxy.

According to Marvel head Kevin Feige, Guardians is the first step into a new stage of the studio’s evolution, and it certainly looks the part. So far we’ve gone to other realms, encountered gods, and tussled with aliens, but now we’re on the verge of taking our first extended steps into deep space, which opens up a whole new universe of possibilities for the future. It’s enough to make a sci-fi fan giggle.

As Zoe Saldana, who plays the intergalactic assassin Gamora, says, this isn’t your typical bunch of superheroes. Led by Chris Pratt’s Star-Lord/Peter Jason Quill, a sarcastic space outlaw, the gang is made up of misfits, screw-ups, and criminals. They’re not as much good guys, as they are selfish types who have to figure out a way to come together for something greater when they find something worth fighting for.

Easily the best parts of this video are the pieces that show Vin Diesel and Bradley Cooper voicing their characters: Groot, a seven-foot-tall alien tree who only says, “I am Groot,” and the heavily armed, car-jacking, anthropomorphic raccoon named Rocket. It’s hard not to watch them in the studio bringing their animated characters to life and not smile, especially when they put up the side-by-side comparison between the actors and characters.

Here is the official synopsis:

An action-packed, epic space adventure, Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ expands the Marvel Cinematic Universe into the cosmos, where brash adventurer Peter Quill finds himself the object of an unrelenting bounty hunt after stealing a mysterious orb coveted by Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe. To evade the ever-persistent Ronan, Quill is forced into an uneasy truce with a quartet of disparate misfits–Rocket, a gun-toting raccoon; Groot, a tree-like humanoid; the deadly and enigmatic Gamora; and the revenge-driven Drax the Destroyer. But when Quill discovers the true power of the orb and the menace it poses to the cosmos, he must do his best to rally his ragtag rivals for a last, desperate stand–with the galaxy’s fate in the balance.

If you’ve been keeping tabs on Guardians, there’s not a lot of new information in this video, but, like most of what we’ve seen, it should serve to remind you that this movie is going to be awesome. Director James Gunn is a master at balancing action and humor, and that skill is going to be full display come August 1.
