Nintendo Direct has come and gone, but not without a trove of gaming announcements, some of which include remakes of beloved Nintendo classics. But perhaps the most interesting among announcements is the untitled Princess Peach game—a gaming release featuring the eponymous heroine as the main playable character.

The teaser trailer showcases that the game is set on stages with rising curtains and backgrounds comprised of wooden props. Our beloved heroine with heart-shaped bangs has magical abilities which allow her to interact with certain elements of the background. This includes NPCs and in-game enemies.

Not bad for a heroine, which was last featured in a gaming release of her own in 2005. For those that don’t know what we’re talking about, Princess Peach already has a game of her own called Super Princess Peach.

According to Kotaku, the Mario developer couldn’t share many details about the game, but the untitled already looks magical. Those “attending” the Direct were offered a glimpse of the upcoming game’s gameplay, but Nintendo opted to keep their lips tightly sealed on what the gaming community might expect from the upcoming game—as they usually do.

The company has, however, promised further details about the Princess Peach game in the future, while industry analysts believe that the game is most likely to drop next year.

Princess Peach is one of the most underutilized Nintendo protagonists, so it’s nice to see her getting some spotlight. There are plenty of interesting elements in the upcoming game, such as transformation scenes in which the heroine enters a stage, and her dress transforms into Cinderella blue and then Supernova white.

Nintendo is, of course, super coy about the details, so we’ll have to wait for a future announcement or for the game to drop sometime next year to learn more about it.

We’re not going to lie; this is a pretty interesting twist of events. Despite being portrayed as a very powerful leader and character in the recently released The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario’s creator Shigeru Miyamoto shared that Princess Peach was presented in a way to give gamers a goal of rescuing her—the main objective of Super Mario Bros. game.

However, with the recent shift in acknowledgment that gaming is no longer a boys-only hobby, Nintendo is looking to make her playable, make her have her own story, and be a more powerful princess.

Apart from announcing the upcoming Princess Peach video game, Nintendo also announced a remake of the Super Mario RPG game, a critically acclaimed classic that was originally released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, and a remaster of an eerie 2013 3DS game Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, as well as a Super Mario Wonder.

The latter isn’t actually a remake or remaster but an entirely new gaming title that takes the gaming series back to 2D and features Princess Daisy as a playable character as well. The mysterious, untitled, and highly-anticipated Princess Peach video game is scheduled to release sometime in 2024 for Nintendo Switch.
