The full remake of the critically acclaimed Final Fantasy 7 hasn’t launched yet, and the staff of Square Enix is already pleading with the company’s management to remake Final Fantasy 6, making it a very hot topic within company walls. However, the game’s director Yoshinori Kitase has already stated that a remake of the game would be very difficult to make—but he didn’t say it’s impossible, nor improbable.

According to VGC, Square Enix staff members have been asking Yoshinori Kitase, who’s now a VP, a member of the boards, and an executive officer at Square Enix, whether the company is considering making a Final Fantasy 6 Remake after the development of the FF7 Remake has been concluded. Per his own statement, Final Fantasy 6 will be very difficult, especially since the Final Fantasy 7 Remake still isn’t finished, so the lead producer isn’t even thinking about the possibility of remaking FF6, but he has confirmed that the developers inside the company are eager to work on the game.

Kitase is obviously focused entirely on the Final Fantasy 7 Remake trilogy, with Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth being the largest PlayStation 5 game of all time—at least to date; the game will ship on two 100GB BluRay discs. With his mind focused on the ongoing development, it’s clear that the lead producer isn’t actually able to give Final Fantasy 6 Remake much thought. But there are other high-ranking employees at Square Enix who are considering the Final Fantasy 6 Remake and one of them is Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi.

Sagakuchi jokingly pressed Kitase on the Final Fantasy 6 Remake during an interview, to which the latter responded that it wouldn’t be an easy game to remake. The game’s original pixel art and 2D format would make Final Fantasy 6 much more complicated to redo, demanding a complete overhaul of the game’s story and graphics. Of course, this means that the same factors affecting Final Fantasy 6 Remake could seemingly be applied to the ongoing development of Final Fantasy 7, which is now quite far from what the original Final Fantasy 7 was on the original PlayStation console.

This means that the game’s narrative, world, quests, and basically just about anything in the remake was updated to modern gaming standards, making it very difficult to stay true to the original game in the first place, and Square Enix most certainly wasn’t concerned with having to completely revamp the original Final Fantasy 7. Of course, the same thing would happen to Final Fantasy 6 Remake if it was ever made.

For comparison, there was a recent discussion about the possibility of remaking the 2003’s Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, but the possibility of a 1:1 remake is non-existent since the game’s ridiculously edgy design and gameplay wouldn’t be suitable for today’s political climate. So, imagine to which degree Square Enix would have to change Final Fantasy 6 Remake, which is about a decade older than the aforementioned Ubisoft title. We’re not saying that it isn’t possible, but we have to agree with Yoshinori Kitase; the Final Fantasy 6 Remake would be difficult to pull off.
