The X-Men have been a mainstay in the comic book film world for years. But back before the popularity of the films, X-Men: The Animated Series was at the height of its popularity in the early ’90s. With the Disney Plus Day announcements rolling out, it was revealed that the X-Men animated series is getting a reboot. The new series will be titled X-Men ’97.

The original X-Men: The Animated Series ran from 1992-1997. The animated series is still considered one of the best comic adaptations to this day. The X-Men animated series helped to springboard the wave of comic book films that would follow. Based on the popularity of the initial series, studios began to play with the idea of releasing an X-Men movie. That movie came out in 2000.

For years on end, fans have been clamoring to the idea of the X-Men animated series making a return. With as many reboots that have been going on the past decade, this show should have been remade years ago. Disney+ has finally pulled the trigger and the rebooted animated series will be gracing screens sometime in 2023.

A ton of voice actors from the original X-Men series will be returning to voice familiar characters, as well as taking on brand new roles. Some returning members are Cal Dodd, Lenore Zann, George Buza, Adrian Hough, Christopher Britton, Catherine Disher, Chris Potter, Alison Sealy-Smith, Alyson Court. Cal Dodd was Wolverine and Lenore Zann was the voice of Rogue. Those are a couple of the more popular characters from the series.

Some brand new voices are also joining the new X-Men series, including Jennifer Hale of Baldur’s Gate and Mass Effect fame and Ray Chase who was has been part of My Hero Academia and Resident Evil: Infinite Darkness. There hasn’t been a release on who these new cast members will be voicing but there are plenty of X-Men characters to choose from.

Larry Houston is set to direct the X-Men ’97 series. Houston returns as the former producer and director for the original X-Men: The Animated Series. Houston had allegedly pitched an idea back in 2019 to revive the long-asked-for series, and he has now been granted his wish. Hopefully, the new animated series can pick up right where it left off. As popular as comic book franchises are now, there should be no stopping the popularity of this revival.

X-Men ’97 is set to release sometime in the year 2023. There has been no official announcement on episode titles or how many episodes the first season will be, but the hope is that the show follows the same formula as its predecessor. X-Men: The Animated Series ran for 76 episodes in its 5 season tenure. Each season averaged around 15 episodes each. The X-Men mythos is still chock full of plenty of storyline arcs that have not yet been visited, so there is no reason there won’t be plenty of episodes to show Wolverine’s anger. At the very least, we need a new Wolverine meme to hold on to.
