In the world of reboots and remakes, sometimes we are treated to sequels that have long been asked for. That is certainly the case for the 1990s classic, Top Gun. The film saw Tom Cruise and Val Kilmer team up for a thrill ride of epic proportions. Now in the newly minted Top Gun: Maverick, there were plenty wondering if Kilmer would be returning in the role of Iceman. A brand-new trailer for the upcoming film was dropped by Paramount Pictures, and though we only catch a quick glimpse of the legendary actor, he has returned. You can see the new trailer below:

Throughout most of the trailer, there is plenty to appreciate. Jet fighters flying through the air at breakneck speed, Tom Cruise on a motorcycle feeding his need for speed, but one moment stands out above the rest. Around the 45-second mark of the video, a commander of sorts is speaking to Captain Peter “Maverick” Mitchell. Maverick has been called on to teach these new pilots at the behest of Admiral Kazansky, otherwise known as Iceman. Iceman was the antagonist of Maverick, played by Val Kilmer in the original film. Though there were tons of rumors surrounding Kilmer being in the film, this is our first look at the man in complete uniform. There is a quick shot of Iceman in his uniform. It is in the form of a picture hanging on the wall behind Tom Cruise while this conversation takes place. A quick and close-up shot shows what fans might be in for once he is clearly shown in the film. You can see a photo of him below:

Fans of Val Kilmer might know that he recently released a documentary about his current life on Hulu. This documentary, aptly titled Val, sent shockwaves throughout the cinema world. It was the first time that everyone got to see what he had been up to and why he had disappeared. A bout of throat cancer left the actor without the ability to speak well, but he still manages it for the sake of the documentary. Armed with a camera for most of his life, we were able to see the ins and outs of one of the biggest stars of the 1990s and beyond. Top Gun: Maverick might be the first time that we get to see him return to glory in a film, and that picture of the actor as Iceman is enough to bring back those warm-hearted feelings about his acting career.

Top Gun: Maverick pairs Tom Cruise with Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Ed Harris, Jon Hamm, and many others as the best and brightest of the young pilots return to take lessons from one of the most legendary dogfighters out there, Maverick. The trailer brings back the same feelings that the first Top Gun film had. The speed of the jet fighters, greater music, and the sense of entitlement that gets shot down by the superiors who know better. Only this time, Goose’s son, Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw has a score to settle with Maverick. Top Gun: Maverick will see the return of Cruise and Val Kilmer in a way that will be reminiscent of the 1990s. The film is set to premiere on May 27th.
