The Umbrella Academy season 2

Netflix’s surprise hit, The Umbrella Academy is back for season 2. Not only was the series itself well received by critics, Netflix recently released its numbers on UA and they are huge. According to Netflix, Umbrella Academy’s first season was viewed by more than 45 million member households. The streaming service counts “views” if a user or household watches 70 percent of one episode or a movie. With that kind of demand, of course we’re getting Umbrella Academy season 2.

WHEN NETFLIX WILL RELEASE SEASON 2

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 kids

The Umbrella Academy season 2 will arrive on Netflix July 31, 2020. That’s much earlier than predicted. Blackman previously said that it takes nearly 18 months to complete a season and the filming began in July of 2019. That would have put the premiere in the November 2020 timeframe on Netflix, but we’re getting it early!

The cast participated in a fun announcement video revealing the show’s early release date. Watch it below…

How’d they get it done early? While other shows were delaying production and cancelling their premiere dates due to the Coronavirus, The Umbrella Academy season 2 team pushed forward at a faster pace. Here’s proof…

FOR THOSE WHO DON’T KNOW

For those who aren’t familiar with the history of The Umbrella Academy, it was originally a comic book series that was published by Dark Horse Comics back in 2007. The first volume was titled The Umbrella Academy: Apocalypse Suite and that was followed by the second volume The Umbrella Academy: Dallas. It took almost ten years but original writer Gerard Way and illustrator Gabriel Bá returned with The Umbrella Academy: Hotel Oblivion.

The Netflix first season series is based on the comics of Apocalypse Suite. This tells the story of seven children who are adopted by Reginald Hargreeves, who happens to be a space alien. These seven children have superpowers and Hargreeves raises them as superheroes who fight crime as they are growing up. They eventually grow apart, splitting up until they are brought back together when Hargreeves dies. As they come back together, they are told by one of their own (Number Five is his name and he has the ability to time travel) that a global apocalypse is on its way.

So show is based on a three volume series. Volume one happened in season one. That hopefully means she show will get at least three seasons but we only know two is happening for sure right now.

RETURNING CAST FOR UMBRELLA ACADEMY SEASON 2

The entire Umbrella Academy will return in The Umbrella Academy season 2. When Hargreeves adopted the children, instead of names, he gave them numbers. They got their “names” from their nanny robot-mother Grace. All the actors playing all the numbers, will be back.

Ellen Page is back as Number Seven/The White Violin/Vanya Hargreeves. Yes, three names for one character.

Also returning in The Umbrella Academy season 2 is Tom Hopper as Number One/Spaceboy/Luther Hargreeves.

David Castañeda returns as Number Two/The Kraken/Diego Hargreeves.

Emmy Raver-Lampman is back Number Three/The Rumor/Allison Hargreeves.

Umbrella Academy season 2

Robert Sheehan is again Number Four/The Séance/Klaus Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy season 2.

The Umbrella Academy 5

Aidan Gallagher still plays Number Five/Travel Boy/Five.

Umbrella Academy season 2

Justin H. Min is back as Number Six/The Horror/Ben Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy season 2.

Other than the original crew, the rest is up for grabs. The Umbrella Academy deals in time travel so the chances of all those dearly departed in season one will be seen in season two are quite high. This could mean the return of those time-traveling assassins Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige). We could also see the Hargreeves patriarch Reginald (Colm Feore) return and along with him robot-mom Grace (Jordan Claire Robbins).

NEW CASTMEMBERS

The Umbrella Academy season 2 will introduce fans to a few new characters.

The Umbrella Academy Season 2 cast

Ritu Arya joins the cast as Lila. Her character is described as being gifted with a sense of humor. She is a chameleon, adapting to her current situation, she can be brilliant or clinically insane, whichever is needed.

Season 2 newbie

Yusuf Gatewood is on board as Raymond, simply a born leader whom everyone would like to know. He is smart, dedicated and warm and has the ability to disarm with a look.

Marin Ireland

Marin Ireland is also joining the The Umbrella Academy season 2 cast as Sissy. She is a fearless Texas mom who, like many, married young for all the wrong reasons.

we’ve seen the future

The first season of The Umbrella Academy pretty much adapted the UA comic’s first volume. It also tossed in a bit of volume two. Expect more of volume two, Dallas, to be showcased in The Umbrella Academy season 2.

At least, that is what creator Gerald Way told Den Of Geek. “When all said and done there’s eight graphic novels planned total,” Way said. “We’re two series ahead of the show and I think right now there’s only been a couple things used from Dallas’ so I think if there’s a potential season two you would see some things potentially from ‘Dallas.’” This means finding out if the Apocalypse actually happens or if the time-traveling aspect saves the world.

Judging from the first look photos released from The Umbrella Academy season 2, our heroes have ended up time-travelling back to the 1960s. That should result in a fair amount of Back to the Future style fun on their way to saving the world.

The Future

It looks like we’re at least getting a season 3. According to What’s On Netflix, Netflix has renewed the show and they’ll be back for more after the completion of season 2.

The turnaround time to complete an Umbrella Academy season seems to be around a year and a half, so expect to see them back some time in late 2021 or early 2022.
