The 2021 adult animated dark fantasy film The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf is streaming on Netflix. It serves as a spinoff of the live-action series The Witcher. The story focuses on the origin story of Geralt’s mentor, Vesemir. The movie, produced by Lauren Schmidt Hissrich, features the voice talents of Theo James, Lara Pulver, Graham McTavish, and Mary McDonnell.

The Story

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf begins in 1165, with Vesemir (Theo James) saving a noble child from the clutches of a leshen in the Kaedwen forest. But things turn sinister when the dying creature utters cryptic words in an ancient elven dialect, suggesting manipulation by an unknown force. Vesemir is drawn into a complex web of events that ultimately forces him to confront his past demons.

Vesemir’s Past Comes Back To Bite Him

The story weaves between Vesemir’s present-day and flashbacks to his youth, offering insights into the origins of the witcher and his close ties with Lady Illyana Zerbst (Mary McDonnell). As a young man, Vesemir’s life takes a drastic turn when he becomes a servant to a noble whose mistress is saved by a witcher named Deglan. Tempted by promises of wealth, Vesemir decides to become a witcher too.

In the present, Vesemir finds himself in hot water after a bar fight leads to the death of two knights. The political landscape becomes tense, with sorceress Tetra Gilcrest (Lara Pulver) advocating for the eradication of witchers while Lady Zerbst sympathizes with their cause. Vesemir is tasked with ridding the forest of Kitsu (Kari Wahlgren), a mutated elven girl responsible for creating monstrous illusions.

The Production

Netflix announced plans for an animated film adaptation of The Witcher in January 2020, entrusting the creative vision to Korean animation studio Studio Mir. The decision to pursue an animated format stemmed from the team’s recognition of the “exciting” storytelling opportunities it afforded them. The result was a cinematic masterpiece that blended traditional and computer-generated animation.

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf received a largely positive response from critics. It boasts a perfect score on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes alongside an 83 percent audience rating. The site’s consensus describes the film as a fluidly animated addition to The Witcher saga, focusing on the adventures of a young Vesemir.

While Nightmare of the Wolf has been praised for its strong script, animation, and compelling voice cast, The Witcher Season 3 has received a significantly lower audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Viewers expressed disappointment over deviations from the original books and reduced character development.

Despite the criticisms, Netflix has confirmed a fifth season, while Season 4 is in production with Liam Hemsworth as Geralt of Rivia. CD Projekt Red is also planning a remake of the original game, a new Witcher trilogy, and a title with a multiplayer component. The games are expected to carry the franchise into the next decade, along with more animated titles like The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
