Fans of The Last of Us and The Last of Us Part II have a big, expensive HBO adaptation to look forward to in the near future. But that hasn’t stopped some fans from making their own on-screen version of the games before its release. Recently, Project Spores released a fan film of the beloved video game series, depicting some highlights from the games. You can check out the fan film below:

The fan film, titled The Last of Us: All We Lost depicts the final fight between protagonist Ellie and Abby, who both double as antagonists depending on which character you’re playing as in the game. During their fight in the fan film, there are flashbacks from both that show how they got to this moment. This gives us glimpses of Ellie’s father figure Joel, her love interest Dina, and various other characters and scenes that occurred throughout the series. Overall, the fan film is pretty well made and should tie fans over until the official adaptation comes through.

It was an interesting choice for the filmmakers to choose The Last of Us: Part II. This game received very high praise from critics, but it was incredibly divisive amongst fans. The biggest point of contention that divided the fanbase was the decision to kill off Joel, who you played as in the first game, The Last of Us. Many fans had grown very attached to the character. They also were divided on the decision to shift the narrative halfway through the game to play as Joel’s murderer, Abby. Though the divisiveness was present, the choices made by Naughty Dog in the story all served a purpose. It showed both sides of the coin and how revenge can be a vicious and violent cycle. The fan film ends in the same way as the game, Ellie deciding to let Abby go instead of killing her to end the cycle of revenge.

It will be interesting to see if the upcoming The Last of Us adaptation from HBO gains enough interest for the creative team to adapt the whole story told in the games. There’s also a chance that they could veer off and tell their own version of the story. HBO’s version will start with adapting the first game for season one. The show will star Pedro Pascal as Joel and Bella Ramsey as Ellie. Nick Offerman, Anna Torv, Murray Bartlett, Merle Dandridge, Gabriel Luna, and Jeffrey Pierce co-star. Presumably, the big-budget of the HBO adaptation will also feature more of the fearsome infected than the fan film. The infected are zombie-like enemies that are the reason behind the post-apocalyptic world in the series.

If you can’t wait for The Last of Us adaptation from HBO, you’ll have a little while longer. The series is set to air sometime in 2023. At least you can check out this fan film in the meantime. Otherwise, you could always revisit the fantastic games and live through Joel and Ellie’s experiences all over again.
