Lionsgate has released the first full-length trailer for The Crow, a modern retelling of James O’Barr’s 1989 comic book series of the same name. Directed by Rupert Sanders from a screenplay by Zach Baylin and Will Schneider, the movie stars Bill Skarsgard as Eric Draven, a murdered musician who is resurrected as The Crow to avenge the deaths of his fiancée, Shelly Webster, played by FKA Twigs.

The almost three-minute clip of The Crow gives viewers a glimpse at the happy couple before they are horrifically killed. “Sometimes something so bad happens that the soul cannot rest… until you put the wrong things right,” a voiceover says while the images see Eric Draven preparing to hunt down and kill the people who destroyed his life. The rest of the video hypes the violence to come in the new movie.

Development on The Crow began in December 2008 when Stephen Norrington announced plans to write and direct a fresh take on source material. Since then, the project underwent several changes, with multiple directors, writers, and actors joining and exiting at different stages. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, F. Javier Gutiérrez, and Corin Hardy were some of the directors attached.

Fans were first introduced to The Crow when James O’Barr’s comic series was published in 1989 by Caliber Comics. The story follows Eric Draven, a musician who is brutally murdered along with his fiancée on the eve of their wedding. But Eric is resurrected by a mystical crow, granting him supernatural abilities to seek vengeance against those responsible for their deaths.

O’Barr drew inspiration for the story from his own personal tragedy – the death of his girlfriend at the hands of a drunk driver. The Crow has been adapted into various media formats, including film, television, and video games. The most famous is the 1994 film directed by Alex Proyas, starring Brandon Lee as Eric Draven. Tragically, Brandon Lee died during the filming due to an accidental shooting on set.

The movie generally followed the plot of the comic, with some alterations and additions. It is known for its stylish direction, atmospheric cinematography, and a memorable soundtrack featuring songs by bands like The Cure and Nine Inch Nails. Despite initial concerns about its release following Brandon Lee’s death, The Crow (1993) was well-received by audiences and has since become a cult classic.
