It’s been a while since we’ve seen The Boys — at least, a while since we’ve gotten any new episodes from Amazon Prime’s runaway superhero satire hit. But thanks to a video posted by Amazon on Friday, we finally know when to expect the premiere of The Boys season 3. We’ll return to the world of corporate “supes” this summer.

The brief video potentially conveys a lot about the upcoming season brilliantly, without saying much at all. The entire video is of a press photo session with Starlight (Erin Moriarty) and Homelander (Anthony Starr), the latter of whom is clearly struggling to keep his composure. While the always concerned Voght PR stooge Ashley Barrett (Colby Minifie) watches, the camera slowly zooms in on Homelander. Usually the most adept of The Seven when it comes to dealing with the press, Homelander’s forced smile finally cracks at the end of the clip as the release date for The Boys season 3 is announced. You can watch the video below.

The Boys season 3, according to the video, will premiere on Amazon Prime’s video streaming service on Friday, June 3. If the new season follows the same format as the previous two, then the first three episodes will be available for streaming on June 3. The remaining episodes will be released once per week and — again, assuming season 3 follows the example of the first two — there will be a total of eight episodes.

As to what the First Look video says about the story of The Boys season 3 — it seems like Homelander’s facade is finally beginning to fall apart. Since the show’s inaugural season, the dark echo of DC’s Superman has lost Madelyn Stillwell (Elisabeth Shue) to his own murderous rage, his son Ryan (Cameron Crovetti), and his lover Stormfront (Aya Cash). Judging by this short preview, the head of The Seven is beginning to feel the strain and may not be able to maintain his trademark image much longer. A scene in season 2 shows Homelander unleashing his deadly eye beams on a crowd of civilians, only to reveal moments later it’s a fantasy Homelander doesn’t act on. Could it be we’ll see something like that in season 3, but without the “it was just make-believe” reveal?

Another thing that may be adding to Homelander’s stress level in The Boys season 3 is Soldier Boy (Jensen Ackles), the series’ answer to Marvel’s Captain America. In an interview in August 2021, The Boys‘s showrunner Eric Kripke said that Soldier Boy will be central to the new season. Soldier Boy was a member of the supes team Payback, which Kripke called “The Seven before The Seven.” Through Soldier Boy, Kripke said, the show will dig deeper into the alternate American history of The Boys.

But, it could also be that Soldier Boy will be something of a rival to Homelander. It’s clear at the end of season 2 that Voght isn’t very happy with Homelander, and considering how the leader of The Seven treats Stormfront before the pair become lovers, it’s clear he doesn’t react well when his authority is challenged. We’re sure to find out more about what’s going on behind Homelander’s eyes in that video when The Boys season 3 premieres on Amazon Prime on Friday, January 3.
