The critics may not be thrilled about it, but Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs are on their way back to the big screen. According to our trusted and proven sources, The Bone Collector 2 is on the way. The stars of the first film — Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie — are attached to return as the crime solving duo Rhyme and Sachs.

If anything, it’s surprising it’s taken this long for The Bone Collector 2 to happen. Reviewers slammed 1999’s The Bone Collector when it was in theaters, but their bad opinions didn’t stop the crime thriller from grossing over $150 million against a $48 million production budget. The film also did much to elevate the still young career of Angelina Jolie, who also appeared in Girl, Interrupted that year and was two years away from becoming the eponymous hero of Lara Croft: Tomb Raider.

It isn’t as if the filmmakers didn’t have enough source material for The Bone Collector 2 either. The first film is based on Jeffrey Deaver’s 1997 novel The Bone Collector, and after its success he continued writing books featuring the characters Lincoln Rhyme and Amelia Sachs. By the time the film premiered, the sequel Coffin Dance had been released, and a third book — The Empty Chair — was published in 2000.

Deaver has since written a total of sixteen novels featuring Rhyme and Sachs, including this year’s The Watchmaker’s Hand, due out in November. Considering that — and that Denzel Washington and Angelina Jolie are both decades older than they were when they made the first film — it seems unlikely The Bone Collector 2 would be adapted from one of the earlier books. We don’t know for sure, but we do have an idea about which novel may prove to be the source material for the sequel.

In 2014 The Skin Collector, the 11th book in Deaver’s series, was published. While there were nine other books between it and the first Lincoln Rhyme novel, Deaver told TheWrap The Skin Collector was meant to be more of a direct sequel to The Bone Collector. That would seem to make it a perfect contender for The Bone Collector 2, particularly considering rather than something like Coffin Dance or The Empty Chair, The Skin Collector is meant to take place quite a few years after the events of the first novel.

While The Bone Collector 2 will be the first film sequel to the original, a few years ago NBC tried and failed to capitalize on the franchise with the short-lived series Lincoln Rhyme: Hunt for the Bone Collector. The series had Russell Hornsby (The Hate U Give) in Denzel Washington’s old role and Arielle Kebel (The Grudge 2) replacing Angelina Jolie. It was canceled after its first season.
