Tatiana Maslany was recently announced as the actress who would be playing Jennifer Walters a.k.a. She-Hulk in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series on the streaming platform Disney+. Deadline originally reported the news and that seemed to be the end to the story. Well, it sounds like there might be some miscommunication going on because someone says that just is not the case.
That someone? Tatiana Maslany. The actress recently conducted an interview with the Regina Leader-Post and the topic of She-Hulk came up. In a surprising response, Maslany flat-out denied being cast in the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe series. “It’s not actually a thing, unfortunately,” the actress said when asked about the casting announcement.
So, what is going on here? Is Tatiana Maslany not playing Jennifer Walters a.k.a. She-Hulk? It should be said that Deadline was running a report from their own sources and did not receive any official confirmation from Marvel Studios, Disney, or Maslany herself. As far as their reporting was concerned, it is sounding like Maslany’s casting might have simply been nothing but a rumor.
But maybe it wasn’t. Tatiana Maslany might have been an actress in contention for the role or had not yet signed on the dotted line for her contract. It is possible that Maslany was in serious negotiations to play the role and Deadline ran the story before the final handshake went down. Contract negotiations for a lead role can take a long time and can even fall apart during the deal. It is worth speculating that this is what happened with Maslany and the role of She-Hulk.
It would be a shame if that turns out to be the case. Tatiana Maslany is an exceptionally talented thespian and would surely bring the kind of energy and gravitas that audiences have come to expect from the Marvel Cinematic Universe. She seems like she would fit in nicely with the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe ensemble. If it is not meant to be, that will certainly be a bummer to the many fans that were excited to see her in the role.
But, there is reason to remain hopeful that Tatiana Maslany will be turning green with rage in the future. It is possible that negotiations for the role of Jennifer Walters are still happening and Maslany is not allowed to speak about them in the press. We have seen similar instances where actors have to stay quiet about their role. Just look at the stupidity that surrounded Benedict Cumberbatch during the Star Trek Into Darkness press tour. He was forbidden from saying he was playing Khan Noonien Singh even though everyone in the world had figured that out.
Maybe Tatiana Maslany is under the same gag order from Marvel Studios? It is a possibility. It is just as possible that she is telling the truth and does not have anything to do with the upcoming series. We don’t know when She-Hulk will be hitting Disney+ other than it is currently slated for some time in 2022. We will have to see what happens with the lead role before then.
