Taika Waititi Is Getting Involved In Yet Another Show
Taika Waititi will direct and executive produce a new series called Interior Chinatown.
Taika Waititi is coming off another successful run in the MCU, despite what the critics might have had to say about Thor: Love and Thunder. However, the creator is also heavily involved in the world of television with Our Flag Means Death and Reservation Dogs. Now, Waititi has a new series in the works called Interior Chinatown, which will see the man direct the pilot and serve as executive producer.
Interior Chinatown stars comedian Jimmy O. Yang, who has also starred in Crazy Rich Asians. The series is billed as a drama by Charles Yu, who wrote the novel of the same name in 2020, and will also serve as an executive producer. The series follows Willis Wu, who is a background actor for a police procedural show called Black & White, but Wu witnesses a crime eventually leading him to begin to unravel a crime web in Chinatown.
Hulu has already ordered 10 episodes of this new Taika Waititi-led series, and we would assume that production is meant to start quite soon, as the series is already in the pre-production stages currently. If shooting begins by the end of the year, we could be seeing Interior Chinatown premiere on Hulu by next fall. Taika Waititi might be heavily involved in TV for the foreseeable future, as he takes a break from directing Marvel features.
As previously mentioned, Taika Waititi has the popular series, Our Flag Means Death, which is currently on HBO. The series was renewed for a second season in June, which could mean that production is meant to start quite soon on that series as well. While Waititi mostly stars in the series as Blackbeard, he also served as an executive producer on the series as well.
Reservation Dogs is another hit series with Taika Waititi taking an active role in producing. The series just premiered its second season in August, which has garnered plenty of critical acclaim, as the second season currently holds an astounding 99% critic approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The series was also nominated at the Golden Globes for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy.
When Interior Chinatown makes its debut, it could mean that Taika Waititi would have three hit shows on TV at the same time, assuming that Interior Chinatown is a hit. Our Flag Means Death and Reservation Dogs have both been renewed for new seasons, and production could begin on both by the end of the year, meaning all three might be hitting TV and streaming apps in the fall of 2023.
Taika Waititi certainly does not get involved in any sort of movies or shows that are going to fail, in fact, the majority of his ventures have been quite successful. With that said, we would imagine that Interior Chinatown is going to be a hit, especially considering it is also going to be on FX, which has also become one of the premiere networks for content. Be on the lookout for this new Waititi series, which is likely set to start production soon.
