We have a first look at Sylvester Stallone in his latest project, playing a character quite unlike anything we’ve seen from the Rocky icon. Paramount+ has revealed the first image from the set of Tulsa King, the new series from Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan. The image was posted to the official Paramount+ and Sylvester Stallone Instagram pages and features Stallone standing in the middle of downtown Tulsa, where filming is currently taking place. Unlike his heroic Rocky and Rambo personas, however, Stallone is playing a mob boss this time around.

According to the entertainment website Deadline, as well as recent interviews with Sylvester Stallone, Tulsa King tells the story of Dwight “ The General” Manfredi, a mob boss who took the fall for his bosses and went to prison for 25 years. Upon his release, his boss exiles him to Tulsa, Oklahoma to set up a new mob business. Knowing his boss doesn’t have his best interests at heart, Manfredi begins to assemble a new crew, in hopes of building a criminal empire of his own. The series is produced by MTV Entertainment Studios and 101 Studios, with Stallone, Sheridan, David C. Glasser, and Ron Burkle among others as executive producers.

In an Instagram story from late March, Sylvester Stallone posted a short video showing his arrival in Oklahoma and voicing his excitement to be on location. Joining him in the Tulsa King cast are Domenick Lombardozzi (The Irishman), Max Casella (Ray Donovan), and Vincent Piazza (Boardwalk Empire). Local Tulsa news stations even caught Stallone filming on the streets of the city in recent weeks.

Paramount+ has gone all-in with Taylor Sheridan, leaning on him to provide the marquee shows for the new streaming service. Mayor of Kingstown, starring Avengers actor Jeremy Renner, was a hit for Paramount+ when it premiered in November of 2021. That was followed quickly by 1883, a prequel series to Yellowstone starring Tim McGraw and Faith Hill. It was met with high viewership numbers and critical acclaim. The Texas native has been keeping it close to home for many of his new series. Not only is Stallone filming in Oklahoma for Tulsa King, 1883 filmed many episodes in the historic Ft. Worth Stockyards and in the surrounding countryside. This promotional video, released by Paramount+ in March, outlines the new series coming from Sheridan and features Sylvester Stallone discussing his role in Tulsa King.

The 75-year-old Sylvester Stallone hasn’t slowed down in recent years, in which he revisited both his Rocky Balboa and John Rambo characters on the big screen. He appeared as the voice of King Shark in last year’s DC Comics flick The Suicide Squad, and even appeared in a 2017 episode of This Is Us with Milo Ventimiglia, who played Rocky’s son Robert in Creed II and Rocky Balboa. The actor recently started producing NFT artwork, which is only available to fans who prove they are big Stallone fans. Last fall, he also released his director’s cut of Rocky IV, titled Rocky Vs. Drago: The Ultimate Director’s Cut. He is also currently working on Expendables 4, which just dropped a sizzle reel at CinemaCon.
