Suicide Squad Director’s Cut Just Screened For One Huge Fan

David Ayer screened his cut of Suicide Squad for a super fan, and the super fan loved it.

The Twitter user behind the ReleaseTheAyerCut account recently took to the social media platform to announce they got to check out a screening of Suicide Squad and apparently it’s a much better and different movie. Of course, they’re referencing the rumored Director’s Cut of David Ayer’s critically maligned Suicide Squad which was released by DC in 2016. David Ayer himself took to Twitter to confirm the individual behind the account saw the cut and their statement that the movie is a different one with a deeper message.

If you’ll recall, Suicide Squad brought together some of DC’s most notable (and some not-so-notable) villains to take on dangerous missions to shorten their prison sentences. The 2016 film was directed by David Ayer and features Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Deadshot (Will Smith), Katana (Karen Fukuhara), Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje), Diablo (Jay Hernandez), and Boomerang (Jai Courtney). The film would also introduce Joel Kinnaman’s good-guy Rick Flag and Viola Davis’ calculated ARGUS director Amanda Waller.

Despite the interesting premise and the relatively stacked cast, Suicide Squad failed to impress. Currently, it holds a 26% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and a 58% from audiences. It managed to perform admirably at the box office with $746.8 million worldwide, but the damage was done — the film was a critical disaster.

This wouldn’t be the first time that a DC Films director felt slighted by the theatrical version of their film. The demand for the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad to be released picked up soon after the campaign began to release the Synder Cut of Justice League. While this campaign eventually bore fruit, it seems unlikely that the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad will be released.

In 2021, Warner Media Studios CEO Ann Sarnoff told Variety they would not be developing the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad. With that being said, things have radically changed at Warner since the Discovery merger, so who knows what they might do with their properties. They shocked the industry by canceling the nearly completed Batgirl, so releasing a Director’s Cut of an existing film doesn’t seem completely out of the realm of possibility.

Still, Warner Discovery might be hesitant to greenlight an Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad considering they basically did a soft reboot by choosing James Gunn to helm 2021’s The Suicide Squad. This film received a much warmer reception from audiences and critics alike and even inspired some of DC’s best content in years with shows like Peacemaker. With 2021’s The Suicide Squad widely considered the better film, they might not want to muddy the waters by releasing a different version of the lesser film.

With the Twitter user hyping up the Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad it wouldn’t be surprising if there was some renewed fan interest in the film getting released. Even stars like Joel Kinnaman, John Cena, Mayling Ng, Margot Robbie, Jay Hernandez, and Will Smith have stated their support for a release of the Ayer Cut. With enough fan demand and star power pulling for the release, anything is possible.
