Star Wars Villain Roasted For Being Smurf Musk

Disney+ dropped the latest trailer for Ahsoka recently, and it gave us some of the best looks yet at some live-action characters from Rebels. Namely, it gave us a good look at the next big Star Wars villain — Grand Admiral Thrawn. While the character does look fairly accurate to his Rebels animated counterpoint, fans noticed he resembles a certain tech CEO if he was a Smurf.

In the above user’s Tweet, you can see an HD still from the Ahsoka trailer, with Thrawn wearing a smartly-ironed Imperial uniform. As a member of the Chiss species, Thrawn has blue skin and piercing red eyes. However, looking at the above screenshot, you may notice that this Star Wars villain looks an awful lot like blue Elon Musk, and Twitter users have subsequently been roasting the look.

Once Star Wars fans on Twitter pointed out Grand Admiral Thrawn’s resemblence to Elon Musk, it’s impossible to unsee.

Once someone points out the resemblance between the Star Wars Chiss Admiral and Twitter’s owner, it’s kind of hard to unsee. It’s hard to imagine that making him look so much like Musk was intentional. Especially since the actor playing Thrawn, Lars Mikkelson, doesn’t look like Musk at all.

Lars Mikkelson voiced Grand Admiral Thrawn in Star Wars: Rebels and brought the appropriate amount of menace and poise to the character. His performance was so good that they brought him back to play Thrawn in live-action for Ahsoka. However, as the fan art depicts, it certainly could have looked better if Mikkelson looked a little more like himself.

Worried fans were scared Thrawn’s blue skin would look strange in live-action, but the Star Wars: Ahsoka trailer is getting unviversal praise on social media.

Still, not everyone is completely dissatisfied with Grand Admiral Thrawn’s appearance, and some fans actually like it. Noticeably, they made Thrawn a deeper and darker blue color than his depiction in Star Wars: Rebels, where he appeared more teal. So there were at least improvements to the character design in some respect.

Although many fans aren’t super happy with Grand Admiral Thrawn’s resemblance to Musk, there’s still a lot of excitement to see the character brought to live-action. It’s been a long wrong to get here, as Thrawn was initially a part of the Star Wars Extended Universe.

When Disney was determining what was and wasn’t canon to the franchise, the Extended Universe was relegated to the “Legends” non-canon category, and so was Thrawn.

Grand Admiral Thrawn Will Be A Large Part Of Star Wars: Ahsoka

However, the Star Wars TV shows, namely the animated The Clone Wars and Rebels series, have liberally sprinkled some fan-favorite elements from the Extended Universe to make them canon. One of those elements was Grand Admiral Thrawn, who was a primary villain of Rebels. In that show’s final season, the young Jedi Ezra Bridger sacrificed himself by launching him and Thrawn to parts unknown.

Ahsoka is bringing several Star Wars: Rebels characters to live-action, including Natasha Liu Bordizzo as Sabine Wren, Mary Elizabeth Winstead as Hera Syndulla, and Eman Esfandi as Ezra Bridger. With Rosario Dawson’s Ahsoka Tano seeking out Ezra, she will be running across Grand Admiral Thrawn at some point in the series too.

We’ll get to see how that all plays out when Ahsoka hits Disney+ on August 23.
