Lucasfilm might be planning on using a new movie starring Daisy Ridley and Grogu to rehabilitate the suffering Star Wars franchise. Cosmic Book News reports that a new rumor from noted Disney leaker WDW Pro could mean a reboot of the current Star Wars continuity. WDW Pro claims that Disney is planning a Jedi team-up between Rey and Baby Yoda that actually retcons the polarizing Star Wars sequel trilogy.

WDW Pro was one of the first people to break the Splash Mountain overhaul at both Disney theme parks, so it’s a good bet there’s at least a kernel of truth in the rumor. According to the leaker, the new Star Wars movie would feature Daisy Ridley as self-proclaimed Jedi, Rey Skywalker (deal with it), and former pupil and fellow disciple of Jedi master Luke Skywalker: Grogu, along with fan favorites Chewbacca and R2D2 and an unnamed mystery character. This Star Wars equivalent of the Scooby Doo gang would presumably run into some galaxy-breaking trouble that would flip the reset switch on the Star Wars universe as we know it.

Why does the Star Wars franchise need to be fixed? Well, that depends on who you ask. When Disney bought the IP from George Lucas in 2012 for a whopping $4 billion, fans were cautiously optimistic. The prospect of new Star Wars films with the original cast was almost too good to be true. Then Disney dropped a bombshell that shook the fanbase.

One of Disney’s first acts as the new stewards of the Star Wars property was to wipe out the EU or Expanded Universe of supplemental Star Wars material. Disney declared everything except the movies and parts of the animated Clone Wars series to be non-canon. Everything not penned by Disney would now fall under the Legends banner.

It was a move that made sense if the House of Mouse was going to replace the old stories with something better. They did not.

Or at least not that fans can agree on. Certain Disney properties like The Mandalorian were met with universal acclaim. Other projects like The Last Jedi split the fanbase in two. Then there’s The Rise of Skywalker, a film Last Jedi fans and haters could both agree sucked, like, really, really, bad.

The unanimous hatred for Daisey Ridley’s last turn as Rey led Lucasfilm to stay away from the big screen and focus on television with their Disney+ offerings like The Book of Boba Fett. Unfortunately, neither Boba Fett nor the Obi-Wan series was objectively any good, which may be why Disney is now turning back to movies.

According to the leak, Disney is making a last-ditch effort to save the flailing sci-fi franchise by uniting sequel trilogy fans (let’s be honest, Last Jedi fans) and Mandalorian fans through the Daisy Ridley/Grogu buddy cop formula. WDW Pro reports that Disney is looking to make Daisy Ridley the lynchpin of the Star Wars universe going forward, saying, “She’s the one that they want to pin this on and try to revive it.”

And if this new movie bombs, what then? If WDW Pro’s information is accurate, it sounds like Disney might be desperate enough to nuke everything and start from scratch. A desperate move to be sure, but as WDW Pro puts it, “Star Wars cannot fail for Disney, and the decision point is that Star Wars is failing.”

Sounds like the company is committed to doing whatever it takes to win back fans.
