If you’re a fan of the fantasy genre, you know that it can be very hit or miss, especially with television shows. For every killer show like Game of Thrones or Supernatural, it seems like there are a dozen stinkers (who can forget such “classics” as Krod Mandoon And The Flaming Sword Of Fire?).

Sound Of Magic On Netflix

But if you’re fantasizing about a Netflix fantasy series that has a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, then you can stop dreaming and start streaming: South Korean show Sound of Magic is available now, and it’s about to become your new favorite fantasy series.

This could end up becoming a go-to for those that love the fantasy genre.

Sound Of Magic Series

What is Sound of Magic actually about? The television series is based on a popular webtoon named Annarasumanara, and it tells a spellbinding tale about the relationship between a young girl and a magician.

When the series begins, she has lost sight of her dreams and lost her belief in magic, but with lessons from the magician (who may or may not be hiding some very dark secrets), she learns how to become the best possible version of herself.

Musical Elements

If the title Sound of Magic made you instantly think of The Sound of Music, then you’re not far off.

A major part of this series’ appeal is that it is a musical, meaning that each episode serves a heaping helping of catchy tunes and killer choreography.

Even if you’re not normally a huge fan of musicals, we think these enchanting songs will restore your faith in lyrical storytelling just as the mysterious magician restores our protagonist’s faith in magic.

Complex And Compelling

As with any good musical, the songs in Sound of Magic are as complex and compelling as the characters singing them. The music was composed by Park Seong-in, and Kim Eana wrote the lyrics.

The two of them spent a whopping 18 months crafting these terrific tunes. Seong-in made the cast take singing lessons and even recorded every single day for an entire year.

It was all in the hopes of creating perfect music; from where we’re standing (listening to the soundtrack on Spotify for the umpteenth time), all of that effort was certainly worth it.

Sound Of Magic Stars

The entire cast of Sound of Magic does an awesome job, but special credit goes to Ji Chang-wook’s magician Ri Eul.

He manages to walk the perfect line between charming, charismatic, and a tad creepy, especially when it comes to his obsession with staying a child well into adulthood.

By the end of the short series, you’ll understand why he won the Global Star Award from the APAN Star Wards.

But the real star of the show, literally and figuratively, is Choi Sung-eun’s Yoon Ah-hi: with a single look, she is capable of selling the audience on everything from her character’s longstanding despair to her newfound optimism regarding her future.

Quick Binge

If you’re still on the fence about watching Sound of Magic, keep in mind that you can easily finish this six-episode series in a day of binge-watching or spread its medley of merry melodies across a slow weekend.

Of course, “slow” is the last descriptor we’d apply to the show itself: it’s perfectly paced, and the spectacular songs help propel each episode beyond the speed of sound.

Forget Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings…this is the fantasy franchise that deserves its own spinoff.
