  • SUMMARY
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3 includes Shadow the Hedgehog, which means fans know the fate of one star already.
  • If Sonic the Hedgehog 3 follows the plot of the games, Alyla Browne’s role will be incredibly important.
  • Shadow the Hedgehog’s origin, if unchanged in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, hinges on Browne’s character.
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3 fans on social media have been playfully roasting Browne for days.

It’s not often that people get excited about the death of an adorable child, but Sonic fans are built differently. It has been confirmed that actress Alyla Browne will be playing Maria Robotnik in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3. Her tragic fate plays a huge role in the story of Shadow the Hedgehog, who was teased in the mid-credits scene of the second movie.

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Star Revealed Their Part

Alyla Browne took to Instagram to confirm her Sonic the Hedgehog 3 role by showing off her on-set chair with the name “Maria” on it. She was also covered in a puffy coat, which prompted one fan to ask, “No offense but are you wearing a body bag?” To which another person commented, “She’s getting into character.”

The Surprisingly Dark Lore Of Sonic The Hedgehog

Alyla acknowledged the comment, joking, “No offense taken.” With Browne playing Maria in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, she likely won’t have the biggest role in the movie. When Shadow breaks out of his lab in the game Sonic Adventure 2, Maria is unfortunately killed by a G.U.N. soldier during his escape. This has a pretty big effect on Shadow, who bonded with Maria during his time in the lab.

Other Stars Haven’t Confirmed Their Characters

Alyla Browne isn’t the only newcomer to Sonic the Hedgehog 3, but she’s the only one who has confirmed her role so far. Other newcomers to the franchise will be Krysten Ritter, James Wolk, Sofia Pernas, Cristo Fernandez, and Jorma Taccone. Browne’s age made her role the easiest to guess, but the other cast members are a bit harder to pin down.

What Else Is Coming From Sonic Adventure 2?

Krysten Ritter seems like a likely candidate to play the role of Rouge the Bat, who plays a big role in the Sonic Adventure 2 game that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 seems to be pulling a lot from. It’s also possible that one of these newcomers could be voicing Shadow, but it’s also possible that they’re keeping that casting announcement a secret until we get a trailer where Shadow speaks. In the meantime, we also know that Ben Schwartz, Colleen O’Shaughnessey, and Idris Elba will all be returning to play Sonic, Tail, and Knuckles, respectively.

Jim Carrey Is Back

Live-action cast members returning for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 include James Marsden, Lee Madjoub, and Tika Sumpter. Crucially, Jim Carrey is also officially returning as Dr. Robotnik. Fans were a bit worried that Carrey wouldn’t return after he talked about retiring from acting, but it’s good to know we’ll get to see him steal scenes on the big screen at least one more time.

Third Time’s The Charm?

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will also bring back Jeff Fowler in the director’s chair. Both of the previous films have turned out to be major financial and critical successes for Paramount Pictures. Hopefully, the third film can continue this trend.

Knuckles Spin-Off

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will be hitting theaters on December 20, but fans will get more Sonic content before then. A spin-off six-episode miniseries called Knuckles will see Idris Elba reprising his role as Knuckles, who trains Adam Pally’s Wade Whipple in his warrior ways. All six episodes of that series will be coming to Paramount+ on April 26.
