Destin Daniel Cretton has officially signed an exclusive multi-year deal with Disney and Hulu’s Onyx Collective. Cretton is the creative mind behind Marvel’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. He is said to be working on a new Marvel Cinematic Universe series that will premiere on Disney+. He will also be tapped for further works throughout the MCU and for Disney. Disney has also confirmed that the director will return for Shang-Chi 2, confirming our scoop from three months ago, where we reported that a trusted and proven inside source for Giant Freakin Robot knew the Marvel sequel was on the way.

This is fantastic news as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings has been one of the brightest spots of the pandemic, and has garnered a ton of praise from across the world of critics and fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe alike. Shang-Chi 2 plot details have not been revealed, but it will be great to see Shang-Chi in action again.

Spoiler warning for this paragraph! This paragraph will go into the details of the final scene of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, and the speculative plot for Shang-Chi 2. The ending of Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings saw Shang-Chi and Katy being summoned by Wong, into the all-too-familiar portals used by himself and Dr. Strange. Since the multiverse is likely to be the main focus of the next phase of Marvel movies, Shang-Chi and his partner could be included in the grand scheme of things. They may even show up in the new Spider-Man: No Way Home film. This is all completely speculative, but tying all of these characters together in Shang-Chi 2 would be great.

Shang-Chi 2 is likely not to hit theaters for a couple of years, as Cretton is currently focusing on an unnamed MCU series for Disney+. He has joined the Onyx Collective, which is a production company that focuses on curating premium content by artists of color and underrepresented voices. He joins the likes of Prentice Penny, who is the showrunner for Insecure, and writer and comedian Natasha Rothwell, who has also worked on Insecure. Onyx Collective also handles all of and all non-Marvel titles produced by Ryan Coogler’s Proximity. These include Judas and the Black Messiah and Black Panther.

Disney is doing well in bringing back prolific creators and directors who have brought to life amazing stories within the MCU. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is a fantastic story that is full of culture and action. Bringing back Cretton to write and direct Shang-Chi 2 means that Disney knows value when they see it and that is a huge reason as to why the MCU has been such a global success.

Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is the highest-grossing domestic release this year, amassing $242.5 million dollars. The labor day opening of $94.6 million dollars also allowed theaters to rebound during the pandemic. The film has grossed nearly $432 million dollars worldwide, and that hope is that Shang-Chi 2 will do more of the same when it releases in the next few years.
