Fans were thrilled to see a digitally de-aged Mark Hamill reprise the role of Luke Skywalker in the season 2 finale of The Mandalorian. Yet, as excited as audiences were to see the Jedi’s return, there is one actor who fans have been hoping for a while would take over the role from Hamill — Sebastian Stan. So far, neither Stan nor Hamill have agreed to such an exchange, but that doesn’t stop the Internet’s best fan artists from bringing the casting as close to reality as they can.

Such an image was created by fan artist apexform, with a Sebastian Stan/Luke Skywalker mash up that could potentially convert any nay-sayers. The rendering shows Luke in his black outfit from 1983’s Return of the Jedi. Chunks of rock float around him, presumably achieved through his mastery of the Force, reminiscent of Rey towards the end of 2017’s The Last Jedi. In the caption, apexform asks his followers what they would think of a Disney+ series with Luke Skywalker as the lead, played by Stan. You can see the image below.

The uncanny resemblance between Sebastian Stan and the young Mark Hamill has been commented on many times. For example, digital artists have created deepfakes of Stan as Luke Skywalker in The Mandalorian season 2 finale, as well as in Jabba’s Palace in Return of the Jedi right before the hero is dropped into the Rancor’s lair. The similarities are so remarkable that upon watching the side-by-side comparisons, you might not actually manage to tell them apart if the video didn’t label them.

Sebastian Stan doesn’t seem to be at all against the idea of playing Luke Skywalker, but he has at least one requirement. The actor addressed the rumors in March while appearing on Good Morning America (via The Hollywood Reporter) to promote The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. “If Mark Hamill called me, personally, to tell me he feels inclined to share this role with me, then I will believe it,” Stan said. “Until then, I won’t believe it.”

For his part, Hamill certainly has a good sense of humor about the fan-casting. Back in 2017, the actor tweeted, “Sorry to disappoint you but I refuse to say “Sebastian Stan-I AM YOUR FATHER!” (even though, in fact, I am).” Along with adding the hashtags #SorryNotSorry and #MySonSebastian, Hamill provided yet another photographic comparison to show how easily Stan could pass as Hamill’s younger self.

It turns out Sebastian Stan can serve as a stunning lookalike for more than just Luke Skywalker. Two weeks ago the first trailer dropped for Pam & Tommy starring Lily James as actress and model Pamela Anderson and Stan as her ex-husband Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe. Both James and Stan look indistinguishable from their subjects. The upcoming series turns the clock back to 1995, when the couple’s private sex tape was allegedly stolen and soon available for anyone curious enough to order it. The series also stars Seth Rogen, Nick Offerman, and Taylor Schilling (Orange is the New Black).

It seems likely fans will be keeping their fingers crossed to see Sebastian Stan one day take up the mantle of Luke Skywalker. For now, they’ll have to settle for some of his upcoming projects like his role as a CIA Agent in The 355, his turn as a con artist in next year’s Sharper, or his time as an architect in The Brutalist. Then, of course, there’s his return to the role of Bucky Barnes in Captain America 4.
