Scream 7 Director Finds Fan-Favorite Werewolf Movie After Sequel Collapses

Following his exit from Scream 7, Christopher Landon has been tapped to direct a werewolf movie called Big Bad. The Lionsgate project, based on the Chandler Baker short story of the same name, is being produced by Todd Lieberman, Hidden Pictures, and Landon. Baker will personally adapt her short story for the film.

Big Bad, The Novel

Chandler Baker, known for writing the bestselling novel Whisper Network, penned Big Bad as a contribution to the anthology novel Creature Feature. The story follows the Strauss family, who find themselves on the brink of turmoil. Sam, a discontented stay-at-home father, contends with his own frustrations, while his wife Rachel senses a restless energy stirring within her.

The children’s behavior becomes increasingly unruly, and a recent mudslide has driven the wolves from the woods in search of sustenance. As darkness descends and tensions escalate, the family must unite to weather the threats, both external and internal, to survive the big bad night. The movie version of the story does not have a release date at this time.

Scream 7 Falls Apart

Big Bad marks Landon’s first directorial commitment since leaving Scream 7 in December 2023. The decision was made in the wake of its lead actors departing the production. Melissa Barrera was fired last November following a series of controversial social media posts. The following day, Jenna Ortega withdrew.Although there is speculation Ortega’s decision was in solidarity with Barrera, the official reason cited was scheduling conflicts. Jasmin Savoy Brown, who appeared opposite Barrera and Ortega in Scream (2022) and Scream VI, is also unsure if she will return for the next installment in the horror franchise. A replacement director for Scream 7 has yet to be announced.

Christopher Landon’s Horror Work

Big Bad is in good hands with Christopher Landon, who is known for his work in the horror genre. Landon started his career in the film industry as a writer and gained early recognition for his work on the 2007 supernatural horror film Disturbia, starring Shia LaBeouf. Christopher Landon later became associated with the successful Paranormal Activity film series, where he worked on multiple entries.

The Paranormal Activity Franchise

He wrote the screenplay for Paranormal Activity 2 in 2010, directed Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones in 2014, and wrote and directed Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension in 2015. Landon gained further acclaim for his work on the 2017 horror-comedy film Happy Death Day 2017, which he directed and co-wrote. The film follows a college student who keeps reliving the day of her murder.

Out Of The Ghost Realm And Into Monster Movies

Landon also directed the 2019 sequel, Happy Death Day 2U, which continues the story with a time-loop premise. The sequel further explores the sci-fi elements introduced in the first film. The werewolf story in Big Bad offers a refreshing departure from Christopher Landon’s usual repertoire of ghost stories, time loops, and masked serial killers, which have been featured in his work over the years. It will be interesting to see how the acclaimed filmmaker translates the Big Bad story, which gained fame thanks to its immensely talented author, Chandler Baker, onto the big screen.Source: Deadline
