Scott Pilgrim Is Coming Back With The Original Cast But There’s A Twist

Netflix will soon have its own Scott Pilgrim vs. The World animated series, with most of the talent from the live-action film returning as voice actors.

The Edgar Wright-directed film Scott Pilgrim vs. the World didn’t exactly set the box office on fire when it came out, but it gained enough of a cult following to create a group of fans that want more. While it’s been more than 13 years since the film came out, Variety reports that fans will finally get more Scott Pilgrim — in the form of a Netflix animated series. While that seems like a completely separate thing from the original film, at least 15 actors from the original film, including stars Brie Larson and Michael Cera, will be reprising their roles in animated form.

Cera will return to the role of Scott Pilgrim in the Netflix series — the young, less-than-famous slacker/bassist who had to fight Ramona Flowers’ seven evil ex-boyfriends in the movie. Ramona Flowers’ original actress, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, will also be returning.

In fact, pretty much every actor or actress worth mentioning from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World seems to be returning for the Netflix animated series. This includes Captain America star Chris Evans once again playing the role of evil ex-boyfriend Lucas Lee, and Succession actor Kieran Culkin playing Scott’s roommate Wallace Wells.

The series will be co-written by the original author of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, Bryan Lee O’Malley. BenDavid Grabinski, who worked on the Clive Owen action comedy Shoot ‘Em Up and the most-recent incarnation of Are You Afraid of the Dark? will join O’Malley in writing the series. Both O’Malley and Grabinski will serve as the showrunners for Scott Pilgrim on Netflix.

The confirmation of these actors’ involvement in the Scott Pilgrim series comes not long after Netflix laid off members of its animation department — leading to speculation that the streaming giant would no longer focus on original animated productions. However, with rumors of a Back to the Future animated series in production and confirmation that they’re creating a Pokemon stop-motion series, it seems that Netflix has a lot more animation up its sleeves than we might have thought.

While the plot of the Scott Pilgrim Netflix series hasn’t been announced, it seems likely that the writers will draw from the six Scott Pilgrim graphic novels. The live-action film draws from many of the novels, mostly focusing on the evil ex-boyfriend plotline — which only formed part of the series’ full storyline.

Scott Pilgrim’s revival on Netflix isn’t the first time that the series has seemingly come back from the dead. The surprisingly well-received Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game was released alongside the film in 2010, but it got delisted from digital stores in 2014 due to rights issues. It was a digital-only title, meaning that nobody who wanted to play the game post-2014 had any way of hunting it down.

However, much like how Scott Pilgrim will be raised from the dead on Netflix, the video game triumphantly returned in 2021, when it was simultaneously released on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and the Nintendo Switch. It also released on Amazon Luna and Google Stadia — though neither of those platforms has become particularly popular.
