team! After months of leaked set photos and casting news, production on Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy has finally wrapped in London, England. Director James Gunn started making indie films such as Slither and Super, but now he’s graduated to the big leagues with Guardians of the Galaxy. He posted a touching wrap letter to everyone involved with the film’s production on his Facebook page:

And that is an Official Wrap on Guardians of the Galaxy. My heartfelt gratitude goes out to all of you involved with this film. Everyone down the line has been one hundred percent supportive of me and the Marvel team at every turn, and although I can be harsh or hurried at times, it has not gone unnoticed or unappreciated. I feel profoundly fortunate to have been surrounded by the people on this film — because of your talent, your insight, your passion, your liveliness, and your friendship. From the cast to the producers to the costumers to the A.D.s to the stand-ins to the P.A.s to the extras to the stunties and on and on, this movie is what it is because of all of you. Thank you thank you thank you a thousand times, from the bottom of my heart. I love you all.

In addition to the kind words to his crew, Gunn also tweeted a few images of wrap gifts he received, as reported on Cinema Blend. The Assistant Directors on GotG gave Gunn a hoodie with his nickname from the set emblazoned on it; while former WWE wrestler Dave Bautista, who plays Drax the Destroyer in the film, gave Gunn a World Heavyweight Champion wrestling belt. A few weeks ago, the entire production crew received Nova Corps t-shirts as wrap gifts from Gunn.

As for the film itself, actor Lee Pace recently talked to Click Online about his character, Ronan the Accuser, who will be one of three villains featured in the film. Ronan has a lot of backstory and twists and turns to his mythology, so it will be interesting to see what James Gunn will bring out of the Kree Empire leader. Lee says:

He’s a fucking psycho! [laughs]. He’s a real monster. I’ve had the best time playing this character. I’m glad its all on film and I never thought I could be so nuts in it! James Gunn is just putting together a phenomenal movie and I’ve had the best time working with him on it. And yea we’ve made a monster of an alien!

When Ronan the Accuser was introduced in the 1960s, he was an enemy of The Avengers and the Guardians of the Galaxy. Soon after his introduction, he evolved into a sympathetic hero of the Kree Empire, which has yet to surface in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If the Kree Empire is properly introduced into these Marvel movies, then that’s a whole different ball of wax. The Kree play a major role in the Marvel universe, along with their rival alien species the Skrulls, so it will be interesting to see how deep Marvel digs into their cosmic mythology.

Now that production has wrapped on Guardians, Gunn will now be spending his time putting the film together in post-production. We’re expecting to see the first teaser trailer for the Marvel movie in front of Thor: The Dark World this November. Considering that the cosmic team of peacekeepers has yet to be shown in public, perhaps the new Thor sequel film will also feature a Guardians of the Galaxy post-credits sequence.

James Gunn describes the story of Guardians as being about “a U.S. pilot who ends up in space in the middle of a universal conflict and goes on the run with futuristic ex-cons who have something everyone wants.” The movie stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Benicio del Toro, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Olivia Lovibond, John C. Reilly, and Glenn Close as Nova Prime.

Guardians of the Galaxy will hit theaters everywhere on August 1, 2014, in 3D.
