The Firefly Board Game All Fans Should Find And Play

Firefly fans might have been (very) disappointed when the Joss Whedon series originally went off the air. It was a stunning blow considering the cult following the series developed in its short time. But though Fox’s mismanagement led to its demise, there are ways the show still lives on. One of them is through the Firefly board game, which, amazingly, is still available to purchase.

The Firefly board game was first released in August 2013 by Gale Force Nine. It allows players to immerse themselves in the Firefly universe by taking on the roles of captains and crews aboard their own Firefly-class ships.

The Firefly board game play revolves around acquiring crew members, each with unique abilities, and earning credits by completing story cards. Plus there are a variety of jobs across the outskirts of space.

Players have to manage their crew’s morale plus all of the gear, and resources while navigating the ‘Verse. Doesn’t sound too different from what Nathan Fillion’s Mal Reynolds had to deal with. Plus, there are encounters with Reavers, Alliance patrols, and rival crews. Combat in the Firefly board game goes through an action point allowance system.

Sure, in the the game, you become Mal, just a lamer version because you’ll never be Mal and you captain your own Firefly-class ship, bopping between planets with your own crew. Would you like to pretend that Firefly aired long enough to jump the shark? Then add Wash’s younger cousin, Terry, to your crew.

You’re a captain desperate for jobs, willing to make money in any way possible. It won’t be easy, pilgrim, as crooked employers, the Alliance, and those pesky old Reavers are around every corner that doesn’t exist in space.

Reviews for the Firefly board game were generally positive. Folks and fans thought it mostly captured the thematic feel and atmosphere of the series. The artwork and quotes definitely play well. The decision-making is on the challenging but fun side of things.

And the mechanics work well too. Fans of Firefly will almost definitely be on board here. Will you be crying out, “Tyen shiao-duh!” at some point? Almost for sure.
