Released at the end of November 2020, The Mandalorian‘s “Chapter 13: The Jedi” arrived with the live-action premiere of Ahsoka Tano, played by Rosario Dawson. The war-weary Ahsoka of The Mandalorian had clearly changed since her early appearances in The Clone Wars. According to some concept art that’s been steadily released since the end of February, her look was almost pretty different.

The Mandalorian concept artist Brian Matyas has been posting examples of his work to his official Instagram account, including early designs for the post-original trilogy version of Ahsoka Tano. For example, there is the image below, posted two weeks ago. He calls this Ahsoka’s “Ronin Jedi” look. Below that is her character poster from season 2 of The Mandalorian. As you can see comparing the two, Rosario Dawson’s costume is grey in both, though in Matyas’ original version, it’s a much lighter grey.

Matyas gives us some other examples, including one from last week. The first one was made after the one above. Matyas writes that Dave Filoni liked the grey palette of the image above, so Matyas kept that while “keeping the cut of the fabric clean and graphic.” Below that image is a post from February, including Matyas’ painting of the Rosario Dawson character in a voluminous cloak being blown about by the wind. The image is an intentional homage to N.C. Wyeth’s Winter. Matyas gives an example of that image for comparison.

Rosario Dawson returned to reprise the role of Ahsoka for The Book of Boba Fett in “Chapter 6: From the Desert Comes a Stranger” and that is not the last we will see of her. Star Wars: Ahsoka is one of the many projects coming from Disney+ in the not too distant future, though there’s no firm release date yet for the show. According to The Hollywood Reporter, however, filming on the show is scheduled to begin at the end of April. So, barring any delays — which have been far too common over the past few years — we should probably expect to see the the former padawan of Anakin Skywalker in her own live-action series some time next year.

Ahsoka Tano was introduced in the 2008 animated film Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and proved one of the most popular characters to come out of the spin-off animated series. Instead of Rosario Dawson however, it was Ashley Eckstein who voiced her and continued to portray her throughout various animated series, and briefly in 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Tano is one of the few Jedi to survive the Great Purge though, it would be more accurate to say former Jedi. During the events of The Clone Wars, Ahsoka is framed for bombing the Jedi Temple and is expelled from the order so she can be tried by the Republic. Anakin exposes the true culprit — Barriss Offee — and Ahsoka is invited to rejoin the Jedi, but she refuses.
