One Piece Will Make History This Thanksgiving

By Jeffrey Rapaport | Updated

One Piece fans will have an extra special Thanksgiving, especially if they happen to be in New York City for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. On America’s favorite day of excessive turkey consumption, the streets of NYC will be adorned with the anime’s own Monkey D. Luffy, who will have his very own balloon art in the famous parade. That’s right—the eventual King of the Pirates will soar through the skies of Manhattan.

The 2023 Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade will debut a One Piece balloon of Monkey D. Luffy.

Luffy’s inclusion in Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade represents a testament to the outsized cultural impact of the manga-turned-anime. As revealed by Toei Animation, the larger-than-life Luffy balloon should be a delightful and adorable representation of One Piece and the Gum-Gum Fruit-powered pirate.

Luffy follows in the ground-breaking footsteps of another Toei Animation icon. Who, you ask? None other than Goku from the Dragon Ball universe, who graced the parade in 2018.

Undeniably, to witness a character from One Piece—a manga and anime beginning over two decades ago—featured in such a historical event as the Macy’s Parade speaks volumes about its enduring legacy. For fans, this Thanksgiving will surely be one to remember.

The Straw Hat Pirates First Set Sail In 1997

One Piece anime

The manga, authored by Eiichiro Oda, initially set sail in the manga world in 1997. The series quickly evolved into a veritable sensation, chronicling the escapades of Monkey D. Luffy and his ragtag crew of diverse pirates. Together, they quest to find the legendary treasure known as “One Piece”—while Luffy vies to become the Pirate King. The manga’s blend of humor, heart, action, and riveting storytelling made it an instant favorite, earning it a committed fanbase that grew stronger with time.

This fan base expanded hugely in 1999 when the colorful universe was adapted into an anime series, which now boasts over 1,000 episodes. Since then, the franchise has grown beyond print and TV—delving into movies, including the recent One Piece Film: Red and live-action One Piece on Netflix

As the gigantic Luffy balloon floats majestically between the skyscrapers of the Big Apple, it will amount not only to a celebration of a beloved character but also a nod to the indelible mark that the anima/manga has left on popular culture.

Luffy’s tireless spirit, unrelenting determination, and boundless optimism mean he is a standout character, but he isn’t alone in this adventure. Joining him is a cast of unforgettable characters, each representing their dreams and stories. These include Roronoa Zoro, the three-sword-wielding warrior, Nami, the skillful navigator, and Sanji, the suave cook. The whole Straw Hat crew offers depth and charm to the globally adored saga.

And we all know Luffy’s incredible, unique ability—what makes him truly special. After eating the all-powerful Gum-Gum-Fruit, a very potent species of Devil Fruit, Luffy acquires the properties of rubber, permitting him to stretch and expand any part of his body at will. Central to One Piece and Luffy’s identity as a pirate, this power constitutes a cornerstone of many of the series’ most epic battles.

Ultimately, as the gigantic Luffy balloon floats majestically between the skyscrapers of the Big Apple, it will amount not only to a celebration of a beloved character but also a nod to the indelible mark that the anima/manga has left on popular culture. Indeed, come Thanksgiving, while we express gratitude for the joys in our lives, One Piece fans have one more reason to be thankful.
