The new live-action version of the anime One Piece has been renewed for Season 2 on Netflix. According to Deadline, Eiichiro Oda, creator of the original manga, who has carefully guarded his narrative’s transition to anime and live-action, confirmed the renewal on social media. The announcement comes just two weeks after the series’ premiere with Oda remarking that people around the world seem to be enjoying the show.

He’s quite right and it’s little surprise that One Piece Season 2 is moving forward on Netflix given that the first season has spent the past two weeks in the number one spot on the streamer’s top 10. Of course, fans of the series will have to exercise some patience in awaiting the new season as the production cannot move forward until the end of the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes.

Clement says they are working closely both with Oda and with the manga’s publisher, Shueisha, to ensure the highest possible quality and fidelity to the source material,

The actors and writers guilds have been striking for months with no clear end in sight, making conditions difficult for professionals across Hollywood while the American Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) continue to refuse to negotiate an equitable deal.

But Netflix’s announcement confirming One Piece Season 2 does seem to indicate that the streaming service, along with others such as Warner Bros., is eager for AMPTP to make a deal so production can move forward. With the series garnering more than 38 million views in its first two weeks, the future for the Netflix property is indeed looking bright. If present interest persists, it could end up being one of the streamer’s all-time most popular offerings.

That’s good news for One Piece well beyond Season 2, as executive producer Becky Clement has intimated that the production team hopes to carry the series through at least a sixth season. This is based in part on their dedication to staying true to the original manga, even as certain elements are rearranged and reimagined.

Two weeks after it’s premiere, Netflix has renewed the One Piece live-action series for a second season.

Clement says they are working closely both with Oda and with the manga’s publisher, Shueisha, to ensure the highest possible quality and fidelity to the source material, while also making the new live-action offering interesting and appealing to both existing fans and new audiences.

Of course, since it is not even yet known when One Piece Season 2 will premiere, it’s hard to make any declarations regarding future seasons. Still, the success of this series so far is quite promising and shows the continued global reach and widespread appeal of the world of the Straw Hat Pirates.

Writers, executive producers, and showrunners Steven Maeda and Matt Owens deserve credit for the excellent reception of the live-action series, along with Clement, Oda, and Marty Adelstein, who also serve as executive producers.

While it seems safe at this point to speculate that One Piece will continue on Netflix beyond Season 2, the future of the series depends not only on the continued excellent work of its production team and cast, but on the continued investment of fans, who seem at this point to have no end of appetite for these stories.

If present interest persists, One Piece could end up being one of the streamer’s all-time most popular offerings.

But both the second season and any future seasons are currently dependent on the strike situation, which will hopefully not delay production much longer. After a certain point, series will have to worry about the availability of their writers and actors, as well as their actors aging out of parts.

Such an eventuality is hopefully not likely to take place for One Piece Season 2, as its cast has been consistently praised for perfectly reflecting the original characters. As long as this series is able to maintain fan interest, we expect its momentum to only continue.
