It’s official, the new G.I. Joe movie, G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant, is going to happen, and it’s set to be released in 2024, according to Collider. But does anyone actually want it to happen? The previous G.I. Joe movies bombed at the box office, despite starring big names like Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson, and Bruce Willis, so we may see the same fate for this new film.

Moviegoers reportedly did not like the first two G.I. Joe movies and its spinoff because they used way too much CGI and the plot wasn’t nearly engaging or interesting enough to keep the audience’s attention. The first film G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), starring Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid, and Marlon Wayans, received 34 percent from Rotten Tomatoes, while its 2013 sequel G.I. Joe: Retaliation, received an even worse rating of 29 percent from Rotten Tomatoes. The 2021 spinoff Snake Eyes somehow managed to get a 37 percent ranking from Rotten Tomatoes.

The distaste for the film franchise can be shown more clearly when looking at how much the films earned from the box office as opposed to how much they cost to produce. With a budget of $175,000,000, G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra only grossed $302,469,017 worldwide. With a slightly smaller budget of $130,000,000, G.I. Joe: Retaliation managed to gross more than the original film, with $375,740,705 worldwide. And despite its higher ranking on Rotten Tomatoes, Snake Eyes only grossed $40,064,325 after spending over double that ($88,000,000) on production.

G.I. Joe Retaliation (2013)

Each of the three G.I. Joe movies had different directors, which may have caused some of the issues with the brand. Following tradition, the new movie will bring in a new director, D.J. Caruso, who worked on I Am Number Four, Eagle Eye, and xXx: Return of Xander Cage.

A returning member of the G.I. Joe movie franchise is producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura known for his work on Four Brothers, The Meg, and several of the Transformers movies. He previously produced all three movies in the G.I. Joe franchise, which may be helpful if he can learn from the franchise’s mistakes in order to steer the ship in the right direction.

The cast for the new G.I. Joe movie has not been confirmed yet, but Dwayne Johnson is interested in reprising his role of Roadblock, and Rachel Nichols is interested in reprising her role of Scarlett. Channing Tatum, who starred as Duke in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and G.I. Joe: Retaliation, will most likely not reprise his role, as the actor has stated that he wished his character would have been killed off in the beginning of G.I. Joe: Retaliation. Despite being a fan of the G.I. Joe franchise since he was a kid, Channing Tatum supposedly did not like the script and even turned down the role of Duke several times before finally giving in.

There is no confirmed release date yet for the new G.I. Joe movie, but when it does come out, we can expect an action-packed movie where the G.I. Joe force once again battles Cobra.
