Netflix Bump Could Bring Back Suits Spinoff Series?

Suits

While it’s an open secret that streaming has had a negative effect on many aspects of Hollywood (including the residuals that actors receive, which is one reason they are striking), something getting popular on streaming sometimes leads to revivals of older shows. In recent years, this has notably included TGIF staple Full House getting a Fuller House revival and Star Trek: The Next Generation getting a revival in the form of a Picard spinoff.

Now, TV Line reports that the streaming popularity of Suits may lead to the return of either its original spinoff, Pearson, or even a new spinoff focused around Louis Litt.

Suits has been a massive hit on every streaming service, sparking discussions of a spinoff.

Casual Netflix fans may wonder why a slightly older series like Suits might get a new spinoff when the streaming platform is notorious for canceling many fan-favorite shows. The short answer is that Suits has proven to be really, really popular: it consistently lands in Netflix’s Top 10 of most-streamed shows, and Neilsen recently reported that between Peacock and Netflix, Suits has been collectively viewed by audiences for 3.11 billion minutes.

That kind of popularity makes it nearly certain that Suits will come back, which may entail reviving an old spinoff or bringing to life the Louis Litt spinoff that was planned but never came to fruition.

Back before Suits had wrapped up its nine seasons, the USA Network released a spinoff called Pearson. That spinoff had Gina Torres as its lead, and she reprised her role as Jessica Pearson, a legendary lawyer who moves from New York to Chicago to become the number one gal to that city’s mayor. It was an ambitious idea centered around a gifted actor, but the show got canceled after only one season for many reasons, including the fact that it didn’t have the ensemble cast that made Suits so popular in the first place.

Rick Hoffman in Suits

A potential Suits spinoff would focus on Rick Hoffman’s character of Louis Litt.

If that Suits spinoff were to make a return on Netflix, it’s a safe bet that the revival would feature more of the core cast of the original show, which may involve bringing their characters to Chicago or, more likely, simply bringing Torres’ character back to New York. However, we’re a bit more intrigued by the idea of a spinoff focused on Rick Hoffman’s Louis Litt character.

In the interview with TV Line, Suits executive producer Gene Klein mentioned that a Litt-themed spinoff is one of “numerous ideas for spinoffs that we mostly just sort of fantasized about,” and the recent streaming bump may help turn that fantasy into a reality.

No matter what happens with a Suits spinoff, fans are anxious to know if Meghan Markle will ever return to the series.

Ultimately, whether we get a revival of Suits, the return of a spinoff, and/or a brand new spinoff entirely will largely come down to which actors are available and what the streaming networks think that audiences are loving so much about this classic legal drama.

For example, it’s clear that audiences didn’t want a spinoff that only focused on Gina Torres character, but if audiences want Meghan Markle to return for a revival, now that she’s no longer part of the Royal Family she could return to Hollywood life. But to major fans of this show, Markle isn’t just the Duchess of Sussex…she has been, and always will be, a queen.
