Netflix Magical Fantasy Anime Is The Perfect Starting Point For New Fans

By Nina Phillips | Published

Little Witch Academia certainly isn’t the best anime out there. But that’s not the point. It’s a perfect entry point for anyone looking to get into anime.

This anime is made up of 25 episodes over two seasons. Little Witch Academia follows a student named Atsuko Kagari, who enters a witch school to follow in the footsteps of her idol.

Little Witch Academia

Little Witch Academia is perfect for anyone who’s a fan of academic fantasy like Harry Potter. The anime even touches upon some more Western themes to make it more understandable and accessible for Western audiences.

This makes it much more palatable for those who are intimidated by anime as a whole. There are enough hints of Western culture to make it easily understandable, and the story is simple and familiar enough that it’s easy enough to keep up with.

Western-Style Anime

Like the themes and elements in Little Witch Academia, the animation is also more reminiscent of Western animation styles. Though you do have some of the classic points like big eyes and other exaggerated features, it’s not as apparent as in other anime. It’s more of a blend of the two styles, which makes it unique and more easily palatable.

Some Anime Are Too Long, Some Are Too Short

Some anime are crazy long, like Bleach or One Piece. It can make getting into anime incredibly difficult if you’re not willing to invest that much time into a new type of show.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, you have some anime that are just 13 episodes and will likely never be finished. This can seem like a waste of time. In comparison, Little Witch Academia is the perfect length.

The Length Of Little Witch Academia Is Just Right

There are only 25 episodes of Little Witch Academia, and the story is fully flushed out in that short of a time. I never had moments where the anime felt rushed or dragged on during these two seasons.

There are so many anime out there that it’s overwhelming to know where to start, and some aren’t beginner-friendly. Extreme fan service, crazy stories, or far-fetched concepts make it hard for some people to get into anime. I strongly believe that there’s an anime out there for everyone. It’s just finding the right one to get you started, such as this one.

From Studio Trigger

This anime is made by Studio Trigger, a large studio that has made quite a few popular anime, like Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, Kill la Kill, and Promare. These anime are vastly different from Little Witch Academia.

If you like the animation style and some of the more outlandish parts of the story, then some of their other shows may be worth a watch when you’re looking for your next anime series.

Family-Friendly

It’s worth mentioning that Studio Trigger doesn’t always have family-friendly shows. Many of their anime feature adult themes, curse words, and nudity. However, Little Witch Academia is fully family-friendly.

A Great Starter Anime

There are a few animes I’d suggest for beginners, depending on who I’m recommending them to. Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, Demon Slayer, and Spy X Family are also some other works I’m quick to promote. However, if you like magic and strong female characters and have found a family, this is definitely one show worth watching to get you started in the big world of anime.

If you want to give the show a try, Little Witch Academia is available to stream on Netflix.
