Netflix has recently axed five shows simultaneously, including Glamorous, Agent Elvis, Farzar, and Captain Fall. However, the cancellation of Shadow and Bone, which had progressed to its second season, has caused the most upset among viewers. Despite the initial success of the fantasy series, the second outing struggled to make a significant impact.

More Cancellations On The Way

According to The Independent, this key factor influenced Netflix’s decision to drop Shadow and Bone, as its substantial budget may not have been justified by its performance in season two. The overall cancellation spree is largely attributed to disruptions in writing and filming caused by the long strikes from the WGA and SAG-AFTRA.Further cancellations from Netflix and other streaming platforms are expected in the upcoming weeks as release schedules are scrutinized post-strikes.

Shadow And Bone Author Reacts To The Cancellation

Shadow and Bone author Leigh Bardugo responded to the show’s cancelation in a post on Instagram. “Friends, by now, you’ve probably heard that there will be no Season 3 for Shadow and Bone and no Six of Crows spinoff,” she wrote.”The news hit me hard. I’m heartbroken and deeply disappointed, but I’m also trying to hold onto my very real gratitude,” Bardugo said, emphasizing the rare privilege of not only having her work adapted into a live-action series but also experiencing success with it. The show secured its place among the most popular Netflix series during its run.

Shadow And Bone Is A Young Adult Fantasy Series

Shadow and Bone is based on the Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo and was developed for Netflix by Eric Heisserer. The Grishaverse is a fictional world where magic and political intrigue play significant roles. The story primarily follows Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a young soldier who discovers a power within herself that could unite her war-torn country.Shadow and Bone made its Netflix debut in April 2021, receiving widespread acclaim for its intricate world-building and fantasy elements. Although the reception for Season 2 was slightly less enthusiastic, dropping from 87 to 80 percent on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, it still secured a spot in Netflix’s Top 10.The final portion of Shadow and Bone Season 2 earned praise for its action sequences and the groundwork it laid for the upcoming Six of Crows storyline. While viewers were aware that a cancellation was always a possibility, the news was disheartening for many. Fans are now urging another studio to pick up the series, with references to other shows that have been successfully revived.

Glamorous Canceled

The other canceled Netflix shows facing untimely conclusions had their own dedicated fans. Glamorous, a live-action series initially conceived for the CW network, met its end after just one season. Despite featuring Miss Benny and Kim Cattrall and exploring the life of a young gender non-conforming queer man working for a legendary makeup mogul, the show struggled with low viewership.

Agent Elvis And More Netflix Series Get The Axe

The animated Netflix comedy Agent Elvis, with Matthew McConaughey voicing a secret agent version of the singer, failed to secure a renewal after its premiere season. Farzar, a sci-fi fantasy series featuring the late Lance Reddick, faced a similar fate as it failed to captivate audiences.Captain Fall, a series about an unwitting sea captain involved in smuggling, was cut short during its first season due to lackluster viewership numbers for its initial episodes. These cancellations showcase Netflix’s commitment to allowing new stories to take the spotlight.
