Neil Patrick Harris has been a television star for essentially his entire life. While he is a well-regarded film actor, award show host, and Broadway song and dance man, his bread and butter has always been television. But Harris has not had a regular series gig on television since Netflix’s A Series of Unfortunate Events finished in 2019. He is returning to the streaming giant to star in Netflix’s Uncoupled, a new romantic comedy series from producers Darren Star and Jeffrey Richman. According to Deadline, the eight-episode show will premier on July 29 and a teaser trailer for the series has just dropped. Check out Neil Patrick Harris in his new show:

There are two main contenders for Neil Patrick Harris’ most famous role: child medical prodigy Dr. Douglas “Doogie” Howser on Doogie Howser, M.D. and pick-up artist/sleazebag prodigy Barney Stinson on How I Met Your Mother. This new role on Uncoupled seems to have a little bit of the old Stinson in him. We first see Michael (Neil Patrick Harris) with a bouquet of red roses in his hands with a dazed look. That look turns to anger and he begins smashing the roses against a garbage can and we get a quick teasing montage getting us up to speed. According to the Netflix synopsis, Michael is a happily married man in Manhattan taken by surprise when his husband of 17 years decides to leave. We see a quick couple of flashes of the two of them sitting on what looks like a therapist’s couch and the husband walking out the door. Cue more rose smashing.

It seems not all is lost for Neil Patrick Harris’ Michael in Uncoupled. He catches the eye of a passing beard hunk in one brief scene. We also see him dancing in a club, clinking wine glasses with (presumably) a friend, and beaming happily while shirtless.

While this is Neil Patrick Harris’ first regular TV gig since A Series of Unfortunate Events, he has kept busy with voice roles on Bill Burr’s F Is for Family and the CGI anime Eden. He also had a memorable, rare villainous role in The Matrix Resurrections as a smarmy artificial intelligence obsessed with analytics and an equally smarmy, memorable role as a Hollywood agent in Nicolas Cages’ recent tour de force The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent.

Neil Patrick Harris has been working extensively with Netflix in the last few years, as has Uncoupled co-creator and producer Darren Star. Star is most known for having created the iconic teen soap opera Beverly Hills, 90210, HBO’s landmark Sex and the City (and its less landmark sequel series And Just Like That…), and Netflix’s hit series Emily in Paris, starring the daughter of Genesis drummer Phil Collins. For his part, co-producer Jeffrey Richman was a longtime producer and writer on the hit sitcom Modern Family (among others), so it seems there is a lot of talent both behind and in front of the camera for Uncoupled. Welcome back to TV, Neil Patrick Harris.
