Melissa Benoist will be hanging up her Supergirl cape after this final season of the CW series. Supergirl will be coming to a close after its sixth season and it will mark a strong run for the actress as Kara Zor-El. Fans have wondered if she will be planning to return to the character in any significant way, but a new report looks to put the final nail in the coffin of that possibility.

We Got This Covered is saying that Melissa Benoist has no interest or intention to return to the role of Supergirl after the series comes to an end. According to their sources, the actress is looking to “distance herself from the Arrowverse to avoid being typecast.” Supposedly, she wants to set her sights on major motion picture roles as well as more prestige television series moving forward.

It is assuredly disappointing to hear that Melissa Benoist wants to leave Supergirl completely behind, but it should not come as the biggest shocker in the world. After playing the role for six years and being intimately connected to it, it is normal for an actor to feel the desire to branch out and attempt to take roles that might not fit in with the audience’s preconceptions. It seems clear that Benoist wants to set her sights on higher-profile parts. That will mean being able to showcase versatility with her performances.

However, it is certainly far too early to claim that Melissa Benoist will never return to the role of Supergirl in the future. There is no doubt that the immediacy of leaving this character behind seems to be freeing to the actress, but who knows what opportunities she will have put toward her in the years to come? If Warner Bros./DC wants to cut her a decent enough check to appear as the character in some sort of crossover or multiverse event, it would not be a surprise to see her come back for one last time. Just look at Brandon Routh and his appearance as Superman. Anything can happen!

Melissa Benoist will undoubtedly go down in superhero history as the Supergirl of a certain generation. Her tenure with the character has been well-received and you can almost bet that we will see younger viewers who grew up with her version of Supergirl voice their support for her in the coming decade. Many notable superhero actors have returned to their roles for a final ride. If the fan demand becomes strong enough, Benoist would almost certainly come back.

Still, this is all just another reminder that Supergirl really is ending and an era for the DC character is about to close. Melissa Benoist put a lasting impression on the character of Supergirl, and even if she never puts on the cape ever again, the memory of her performance is destined to live on for a very long time. The sixth and final season of Supergirl will begin airing on the CW next year. Enjoy it because it could be the last time you see Melissa Benoist as the Last Daughter of Krypton.
