Margot Robbie has made the role of Harley Quiin her own over the course of just two movies: the not-as-terrible-as-you’ve heard Suicide Squad and the downright excellent Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn). She will be returning to the role in writer/director James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad, but the future for Harley Quinn after that is up in the air. What exactly could be planned for the jovial jester once James Gunn’s R-rated ensemble movie comes out next year?

If a new rumor is to be believed, it sounds like Margot Robbie could be headed to the small screen as Harley Quinn in an HBO Max limited series. We Got This Covered is reporting that the streaming platform is considering a limited series for the anti-heroine. They also claim that there are no clear plans in place for the character once The Suicide Squad hits theaters. However, Warner Bros. still wants to keep Robbie on as the character as they recognize her popularity and genuine passion for the role.

There is definitely a lot more to explore with Margot Robbie’s version of Harleen Quinzel a.k.a. Harley Quinn. The character had a great arc in Birds of Prey (and the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn and it looks like she could be headed for another interesting turn in The Suicide Squad. However, there is the possibility that she won’t even survive that movie. If so, could this potential HBO Max series act as a way to fill in a part of her timeline that we haven’t gotten the chance to see?

Of course, she could make it out alive in The Suicide Squad and this proposed HBO Max series could continue her story in an interesting way. Margot Robbie could take the character of Harley Quinn in a different direction and use an HBO Max limited series to both show us parts of Harley’s past that we haven’t seen yet and propel the character in a direction that could lead to future feature film adventures.

It certainly sounds like Warner Bros. wants to use HBO Max to expand their DC Comics stable to an even larger degree than they have with theatrical feature films. And with companies like Disney focusing on streaming content as their main creative output, Warner Bros. might be doing the same and using Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn as a way to gauge the interest of fans for such an endeavor. Will DC Comics fans be motivated to subscribe to HBO Max if a Harley Quinn show is available on the platform.

What makes this doubly interesting is that HBO Max already has the animated show Harley Quinn and that has proven to be quite a critical success. It was recently renewed for its third season, so this news about Margot Robbie headlining her own live-action show based on the character does have us a little puzzled. Granted, there is nothing wrong with having multiple Harley Quinn shows – could a wild crossover even take place? – but there would have to either be a discontinuation of the animated show or a pretty clear delineation between the two so users would not get confused about what they were choosing to watch.

It would be a shame if The Suicide Squad ends up being the last time we get to see Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. The actress has done a phenomenal job of embodying the classic elements of the character while also crafting her own distinct take on Harley Quinn. There are plenty more interesting and compelling avenues the actress could take with Harley Quinn, and if a limited series on HBO Max is how she can continue to play the character, we are definitely in support of that possibility.

We will simply have to keep our eyes and ears peeled for any more news about Margot Robbie’s future as Harley Quinn. With so many DC Comics projects being considered for HBO Max, some will likely fall by the wayside while others maintain their momentum all the way through development into actual production. Hopefully, this Harley Quinn limited series is one of the projects that actually gets to be made. We could always use a little more Harley Quinn in our lives.
