  • SUMMARY
  • Fans waiting for M3GAN 2.0 just got some disappointing news.
  • Universal has pushed back the release date of M3GAN 2.0 from January 2025 to May 2025.
  • No reason has been given for the delay.
  • Many believe the delay has something to do with the writers’ and actors’ strikes

Last year was a big one for the return of franchise horror favorites like Scream and The Exorcist, but the beginning of the year introduced audiences to a new terrifying icon in an AI doll known as M3GAN. An instant box office success, Blumhouse almost immediately moved forward with plans to carry through with a sequel to the production which was set to arrive in theaters in January 2025. Unfortunately, fans will now need to wait a little bit longer as Universal Pictures has bumped M3GAN 2.0 four months back, now setting it for an arrival of May 16.

We Don’t Know Why, But There’s A Good Chance We Know Why

While no reason was given by the studio for the reason why they decided to push M3GAN 2.0 into a spring release slot, the most logical conclusion would be that, like many other productions, plotting and planning for the horror sequel faced numerous slowdowns due to the writers’ and actors’ strikes. Still, Universal promises that this in no way signals the end of the tiny slasher as the studio is expecting the wheels to begin turning someday soon.

M3GAN Fans Want Their Killer Doll Back

As should be expected, the M3GAN fandom wasn’t very happy upon finding out the news that they’d need to wait longer for the next chapter in the story. Taking to where else other than X, followers made their feelings about the shift in M3GAN 2.0’s release date known. One user must be having a rough start to 2024 as they wrote, “Noooo I needed this,” while others said that they were still excited, with another writing, “It doesn’t matter. I’ll be there whenever it comes out.”

The Original Writer And Director Are Back

Gaining steam and a multitude of support from its stalwart audience, part of the reason that the faithful are sticking by M3GAN 2.0 despite this break of bad news is that the original helmer Gerard Johnstone will be returning to the director’s chair. On top of this, Akela Cooper, who penned the original film’s script is back in writing action, meaning that the follow-up film will have the same tone and voice as the one that started it all.

The First Film

In M3GAN, a techy inventor named Gemma (Allison Williams) designed the protocol for an AI-driven doll to be not only a child’s best friend but also have a touch of parental guidance. Giving the doll to her niece, Cady (Violet McGraw), whom Gemma is the legal guardian of, the bond between M3GAN and Cady becomes a little bit too strong with M3GAN going on a killing spree to make sure she keeps the young girl “safe” and stays her number one bestie. The final moments of the first film set the stage for a sequel but, as of right now, it’s unclear whether Williams or McGraw will be involved in M3GAN 2.0.

We’re Still Waiting For More Details On M3GAN 2.0

On one hand, M3GAN 2.0 could see the return of the doll, rising from the ruins of technology to claim Cady as her own, while on the other, the creative team could give M3GAN to a new family who will be faced with the fallout. Also unclear is whether Amie Donald will be returning to the movement role of M3GAN as the actress has of course grown since the first film came out. Out of all the unknowns, it’s more than likely that Jenna Davis will return to voice the AI doll.
