One of the exciting things about Loki on Disney+ is that it not only ties into the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies we have so far, but it is going to be giving us hints about where the MCU is going as we move forward into Phase 4. It’s impossible for a series like Loki, which deals with time travel and features such an iconic character, to not be giving us hints about the future. And now, a major moment in the first episodes may have set up one of the big Marvel movies to come, one that’s been talked about but not confirmed yet.

According to Mikey Sutton from Geekosity Mag, a key moment in Loki has set up Secret Wars. The original comic books were written in 1984. They were rebooted as comics in 2015. Back in October of 2020, Mikey Sutton wrote that Secret Wars was being made for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Now, he says, Loki has set the path for that movie to come down the pipeline.

If you are not caught up with Loki, then be warned that the following piece of dialogue comes from the beginning of the show. That means it’s a slight spoiler, but without context, shouldn’t ruin it for you. So, in the show, Miss Minutes from the Time Variance Authority appears. She says, “Long ago, there was a vast multiversal war. Countless unique timelines battled each other for supremacy.”

The moment Miss Minutes said this, Loki fans were hitting the internet to either pose their theories on what she meant by “multiversal war” or to search for what it could mean. Fans know that something like that is likely something that points to a source in the Marvel comics. So what could she be talking about? Well, of course, Mikey Sutton posits that this is setting up the Secret Wars movies. He considers it a done deal. But is that a stretch? Actually, probably not at all. This seems entirely plausible, especially since he’s not the only one saying it. Even those who are unaware that Mikey Sutton has scooped the Secret Wars project for the Marvel Cinematic Universe are saying that the “multiversal war” must be referencing the Secrets Wars comics.

One thing that seems like a strong possibility is that we’re ony going to get mentions of this “multiversal war” in Loki to set ground work that will be built upon in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The showrunner for Loki, Michael Wardon, is also a writer for the Doctor Strange sequel. As the title implies, that movie will be dealing with the Mutliverse. It would seem like, from there, the writers could easily built into Secret Wars.

Secret Wars is a beloved Marvel comics series. It’s easy to see why it became popular. There was an entity known as the Beyonder. He is observing the world and seeing superheroes fighting. Then he goes ahead and lifts them out of their lives and drops them into a new place, called Battleworld. They’re told to fight and then they’ll get whatever they want. The series is such an easy one to like. It takes all of your favorite characters, whether they’re Avengers or X-Men, and drops them together into battles. It’s exactly the kind of thing that Marvel comic fans want to see, and Loki was an easy place to set it up with the focus on time and the Multiverse. It’s also a natural story to tell in the near future for the MCU, and we come to a place where the Avengers and X-Men are going to be on screen together. Crossover movie events, here we come?
